1. Space them: The fewer plants per container the better the yield this even translates to helping you reduce your labour because you water less and feed less when you space them. Use a large container minimum of 14- 20 L 3-5gallon.
2. Plant them in full sun (with container/backyard gardens you might have so many shaded areas choose an area with at least 6-8hrs daily especially in a non tropical climate like ours
3. Feed often for is basically in the grass family so they love nitrogen rich soils things like chicken manure, horse manure, worm castings, blood meal, bone meal fish emulsion or weed manure works for the organic gardener. Now depending on your variety and climate some corn plants take up to 120days to mature I start feeding my container corn plants weekly when it hits the half way mark. This is because the compost has some nutrients that can feed the plants for a couple of months
4. Corn in containers are very very thirsty give them as much water as possible in the heat of summer they might need watering twice daily especially when you have too many plants in a pot.
5. Wind can damage container corn plants easily they need wind protection/ shelter
6. They can get diseases or be eaten by pests/ such as squirrels, badgers, foxes or bugs (corn worm) aphids etc especially if organic gardening be vigilant. I use socks /fencing to protect the cobs from animals and spray with Neem oil if necessary.
7. They might need hand pollination especially if you are growing only a few plants because corn is mostly wind pollinated.
