Brilliant video as always, was debating lifting or trying to mulch my Dahlias ( fell in love with them last year and planted loads this year). I was debating if I could get them through the winter but have clay soils so now a definite to lift. Brilliant as well to store in to he trays etc rather than old compost etc which was going to be a real problem, space wise Thanks again p.s. bought the cc Wizard of Oz this year and it has been productive, now my favourite as well 😃

I may have lifted my tubers a little early, they had only a mild frost but I wanted to clear the bed they were in and mulch the remaining plants before it got to cold and wet. Anyway I did clean of most of the soil and the thought why don’t I just hose them completely clean with a fine spray on the hose gun. Now lovely and clean but is there any reason I should not have done this? They are now in my greenhouse that has a frost heater resting upside down to dry for a couple of weeks before I put them in cardboard boxes in a a unheated shed. Fingers crossed.

i'm wondering if you can leave them in pots if they were already in pots and just move them inside into my conservatory where its pretty cool and dry? i live in the south of england
@homegrowngarden
3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! I would however check to see how wet the compost is in the pot because they take a long time to dry out in winter and can easily become waterlogged. In which case they could rot the tubers. I would replace the compost in spring for some fresh stuff that’s full of the nutrients it needs. Hope this helps!

@homegrowngarden

The ideal temperature range is about 5-10°C anything above that is less than ideal but might still be passable. They’re hardier than you think. Even if they get too dry and shrivel up it’s possible to rehydrate them in spring and they will grow. 👍

Thanks for watching! No, I don’t fertilise on planting. I only begin the feeding once I see the first flower buds appear. This is usually early July. It’s also worth mentioning that I stop feeding around September to give the plants time to slow down before their dormancy.
