Here are the amazing results from growing container fig trees in a commercial greenhouse for the last 6ish weeks.
Introduction (0:00):
I started off by sharing my excitement about the current growing season. I shared that both my multiple garden plots and backyard fruit trees are doing exceptionally well, despite the drought that affected the blueberries and honeyberries last year. Most importantly, I highlighted the progress of the fig trees.
Evaluating Potted Figs (00:33):
I moved on to assess the potted figs that had been given a head start in the greenhouse. I explained the necessity of evaluating which figs had fruits, which trees might need help or adjustments, and the importance of sunlight for each tree.
Adjustments & Fruit Set (01:59):
I discussed the adjustments I had made to the trees and the fruit set that we wanted to achieve. I mentioned the need to look for any spots on the trees that might need attention.
Fig Mosaic Virus (02:30):
I then spoke about some trees that were infected with the Fig mosaic virus to a higher degree, necessitating regular rejuvenation pruning.
Young Trees & Hormonal Imbalance (06:29):
I talked about young fig trees and their hormonal imbalance. This imbalance makes the trees focus on growth rather than fruiting. I explained that the trees would eventually slow down their growth and produce figs, but we needed to let them grow naturally.
Explaining Fruit Set (07:06):
I showcased some fig trees that were fruiting because we got everything right in terms of light, watering, temperature, and health of the trees. I showed an example of a tree with good fruit set.
Pinching Technique (08:10):
I demonstrated the pinching technique, where I pinched the continuation bud of the apical bud to stop the tree from growing and allow the lower branches to gain dominance.
Celeste Figs (09:17):
I showed a type of Celeste fig called Saint Margherita, and explained that despite their later fig formation, Celeste figs ripen quickly. I showed another example of a black Celeste fig and discussed its fruiting timeline.
Heat Unit Balance (11:53):
I explained the importance of balancing heat units to encourage fruit bud setting and fruit ripening. I compared two fig trees in the greenhouse, showing how one tree grew a lot and set good fruit while the other didn't due to the heat imbalance.
Pruning for Tree Health (14:01):
I explained my approach of removing tiny fruit buds to help the tree grow and maintain its health. I emphasized the importance of allowing the tree to grow rather than just fruiting.
