It might take a little longer to water them with the plunge and drain method, but I think that it is worth the effort. I'm super happy that your plants are growing better using coconut husk as well!

I now swear by your coconut husk method as well, Doug. Thank you so much for turning me on to it! I've never seen such a stunning specimen of PES-03, either. I also can't believe that after 8 years of trying to grow PES-03, I finally may have figured out the secret. I will know a lot more after going through a winter with it hanging in a regular north facing window upstairs without the benefit of the warmth and humidity of a grow tent. Right now it looks fabulous and has even gotten larger than it was in the video. Everyone of the three leaved Bella cuttings that I started immediately reverted to two leaves with all new growth so there would not have bee much to show.

Hi Doug, great video and gorgeous Bellas! Where do you over winter your Bella's? Mine are in the house year round with about 60% humidity under full spectrum lights. I try to keep them on the cool side, by the south facing windows away from my heat source in the winter and I find they tend to do better. I added a bit of cactus soil to the coco husk chips for the Hoya that need more moisture as in the house they tend to dry out a bit faster.Yup, the coco husk chips have been great for my Hoyas, changed everyone over about 8 months ago. It simplifies everything so much which is a plus with so many Hoyas. Have a great day, Happy Fall! 💚

Hi Carol, I am planning to overwinter all of my Bellas in windows in the regular house. My conditions are similar to yours, but I probably don't have nearly as much light as most of my windows actually face north. I will know a lot more about how well they will perform in the windows in a few months. I am happy that you have had success with coco chips too! I hope you have a wonderful, happy Fall as well❣

Thank you! Gorgeous plants! Do you have a way to secure them in the pot, to prevemt them from “jumping” out of the pot once they grow bigger and heavier? Or you prefer to trim them?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas
11 ай бұрын
That is a question that I have not faced in quite some time. With my lightweight mix the weight of the plant will likely want to pull that root ball out of the pot. I guess I would opt to trim the plant and use the cuttings to restart another plant using it to eventually replace the original. Bellas do grow pretty quickly.

Lovely plants. Does the coir dry out much between waterings? I have been keeping my bellas in saucers with a little water in so they never dry out and they grow very nicely. That is in coir fibre compost rather than chips.
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas
11 ай бұрын
Good question! The coir chips at this point hold enough moisture between waterings because I soak the entire root ball. Also, there is a little saucer on the bottom of all of those hanging pots that you saw in the video, which does hold some water even after tipping the plant on its side for about 10 seconds to drain. I might have to move to keep more water in those saucers as the plants get larger. When the plant gets really large it will be time to move it to either a larger pot, or start the whole thing over again from cuttings. Because these Bellas can get so large, I would probably opt for starting over, because of space limitations. I am glad that you are doing so well using coir fiber with a little water in the saucer!

They really don't need that much light, but do save most of their flowering for the summer when there is the most available. I have had my Bella grow poorly, but they have always wanted to flower so I don't know what is causing yours not to flower unless it has something to do with the semi-hydro?

The Hoya Bellas can easily take that kind of warmth as long as the substrate doesn’t dry out too much. I find it is a plant that it’s important to get into a watering routine with and not deviate too much from it or it won’t be happy.
