Fr. Eric Nicolai preaches the January recollection from Lyncroft Centre in Toronto. Today he focuses on growing in the virtue of humility. In December of 1976 Blessed Alvaro del Portillo wrote to the members of Opus Dei and said: "Be convinced that humility is always a starting point".
Then he quoted an old letter from Saint Josemaria from December of 1961, but which we can apply to ourselves now at the beginning of this new year, where are spirits are eager now to begin again afresh in fidelity to God’s plan. Here is how Saint Josemaria said it:
"Be strong, be determined, unshakeable, serene, victorious! But humble, always humble. Because we know full well the clay we are made of, and we perceive at least a little our pride and a little of our sensuality…But not all of it. Let us identity the obstacles to our faith, our hope and our love! If we do, we will be at peace: we will sense we are better children of God, and we will be able to go forward during this coming year." (Notes taken from a meditation 3 Dec 1961).
Music, in opening and closing: F. Handel, 'Ombra mai fu' from Serse, HWV. 40 Piano Glen Hoban, from Museopen.com.
