Hello There Peggy! I discovered yr channel on LECA for beginners. After going through so many on YT. Yours is comprehensive and easy to follow and understand. Thank you for sharing all your tips and advice on LECA here. I have just bought LECA and am in the process of washing & soaking them. Planning to start by transferring my little Wandering Jew & Hoya Carnosa plant cuttings now rooting in a glass of water & soil, onto LECA. And go slowly & hopefully progress from there. Looking at all the various water vessels here. Here in my country of Singapore it’s always hot & humid. Watering requirements are different. Tons and tons of beautiful orchids are here. Could you tell me how you put that hole into the side of yr transparent disposable cup? Also would there be a need for holes are the bottom too or just holes at the side of the cup? Thank you so much. Going to follow and subscribe.
@PeggysPlants
2 жыл бұрын
Welcome Joy! I'm happy my video was helpful. The purpose of having a hole in the side is so you know exactly where your water level is. This is especially important when you first start your plant in leca so that you know your roots are above the water line and will not be sitting in water. No need to put holes in the bottom, since that would prevent your vessel from holding water. I use a soldering iron to put holes in my plastic cups. Best of luck!

Hi Peggy, I love all your plant videos! Thank you for making them so informative!! I wanted to ask a question - how much water do you fill in into yourself-watering pots with LECA? Does the water touch the booth of mesh pot or is it below the mesh pot? Do you use a wick that sits in the water reservoir at the bottom of these pots?
@PeggysPlants
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Sarika, I don't use a wick in my leca pots. The bottom of the mesh pot is in the water, since it is the only way the Leca can wick up water, since there is no wicking string. Starting off, I always make sure the roots are not in the water and can grow down to the water. Hope that helps.

@@PeggysPlants Thank goodness I found this question and your answer regarding self-watering pot and leca.I have few self-watering pot and I just bought leca but I'm new to leca. Thanks to your video and great explanation (straight to the point and easy to understand, no unnecessary dragging details) I understand more about it. I have a question. If I'm using self-watering pot with leca, do I need to cut the roots if the root growth reach the water? Or do I need to replace with bigger pot? I hope you can answer this.

Hi, Peggy! I'd like to make a request. I live in Fort Myers, FL, so not too far from you at all, and I'm wondering how people like us would "winter over" our house plants. Like for our 2 days of winter? Or do certain plants still go dormant no matter where you live? Id like to know what you do and would love to see a video on it. I thoroughly enjoy your channel. Thanks so much!

Hello Tara! I am just beginning to transport my plants from our home in the Keys to Central Florida. I've been living in zone 11, which is a tropical climate, so I have not had to overwinter or worry about plants going dormant. That's something I will have to learn about in the future. Maybe a viewer who lives in Central Florida will see your question and respond. Thanks for watching!

Thank you, Ms. Peggy! You are clear, concise and so informative with no extra! That’s what I need. My anxious brain can’t do extra. 😬 I feel ready to try this. I’m going to try my first glass no-net pot transition. I just did my first net pot one this morning. I’m terrified of glass drilling (it seems a little complicated living in an apartment without a backyard; but I think it might be possible. I’m trying a mason jar first so I can measure the water level with those markings. I’ll phone a friend aka my husband to help me with the glass drilling after I see how these first trial ones go! 💪🏾) Again, thank you! If you have a CashApp or similar I’d love to donate for your time. 💚🌱

Thank you! The key to drilling the holes is going slow with even pressure. I've never broken a glass and didn't have any experience when I started drilling holes. Using a diamond bit is important and I actually drill mine over the kitchen sink. It makes cleaning up any dust bits quick and easy. Once you put the hole in, you won't need to gauge the water level since you won't be able to fill past the hole. Also, you will be able to visually see how high the water is wicking up in the Leca. I'm sure it will turn out fine for you! Thanks for the donation offer. Right now, I don't have anything like that set up. Watching the videos alone, is appreciated. Good luck!

Hi how come my orchids roots are rotting from leca😭 i did all the steps such as the roots only touching the roots then spraying hydrogen peroxide on the roots before planting. 🥹🥹what did i do wrong😭😭

It's natural for some roots to die off when converting to leca. In time the orchid will grow water roots and the plant will be fine. What you're experiencing is perfectly normal.

Do you root your plants in leca in the same manner as the ones with actual roots? Thanks so much for this video. Now I just need to find out what kind of nutrients to use and how to use them. I want to switch a few hoyas to leca because its difficult in soil I think.
@PeggysPlants

Yes I do. Also, I use the same fertilizer with my plants in Leca as I use with soil. It's diluted in the water and I just pour it in when the vessel needs water added. I've been doing it this way for years and it works for me. Thanks for watching!
