I have 8 of these planted at 5000 feet in Hawaii. Our climate is like Northern California. Been in a drought for a year, I drag hoses all over 10 acres. I have a couple of these planted 3/4 years ago over 12 feet high. They use the trees to make pencils, that cool smell you get when you sharpen a pencil is the incense.

Nice! High elevation Hawaii would be a good place to grow them. Do you have any southern hemisphere conifers in your collection? You could grow almost anything in your climate!

I had a newly planted Incense Cedar, and for some reason it died. I had it planted in some heavy red clay, so maybe that was a factor. I thought I had read they were tolerant of clay, so that is why I tried. I replaced it with an oak.

Good video.... Your actually zone 7B now according to the "gold standard" USDA hardiness map. Lol.... They changed it in November of 2023. Some people refuse to except that the map changed, but I guess I'll just go with it. Most of the pushback from some people refusing to acknowledge their new zone designation is a lack of knowledge on what the map really means.... IE, ""Average""" annual minimum. And not the coldest temp you will ever see in your location.

I remember that change, but the past two winters in mid TN have had the coldest temps i've ever seen here, and i've lived here my whole life. Good point about averages, but when planting for the long term, coldest possible temp is really a more useful data point. The other variable is if the plant is more or less hardy than advertised... so i just have to try a wide variety and see what sticks.

@@moseseisley557 I do the same myself. I plant a bunch of stuff here in East TN and see what does well. Surprisingly I've been lucky thus far.

@@johnb2740 Have you tried illicium yet? That was the biggest shocker for me. At -4°F the hollies were defoliated and cryptomerias and carolina saphires died, but illicium parviflorum didn't have a single brown leaf!

@@moseseisley557 Not sure why you have trouble with cryptomeria winter hardiness, because they are actively growing in Ohio.

Where I am I would need perpetual protection from deer rubbing for this tree.

I have five 3 foot incense cedars. I believe I read that they have deep taproots and don’t like being transplanted. Wonder if you have any experience with moving these trees after they’ve been in the ground.

I have not tried to move one yet. What part of the country are you growing incense cedar in?

I am in southern Connecticut ( a lot of marine influence. Not as hot or as cold as inland CT). We just got put in zone 7a.
