I am so glad I just found your channel this week!! All of your videos have been so relevant to my own home garden. I don’t grow for production professionally, but I do love making arrangements and someday I hope to be able to sell plants or cut flowers. You’re a wealth of knowledge, you explain everything so well and I’m really excited to keep learning from you!! If you ever need ideas for more videos I’d love to learn how to improve production from plants like: dahlias, snapdragons, cosmos , daisies, roses, calendula, zinnias, iris, delphinium, astilbe. PS. I already learned a very valuable tip from you. I had cosmos sonata planted near my tomato beds last season. Yesterday I found a bunch of cosmo seedlings around the bed! I happily transplanted them to a new spot, but you’re right! Even being in zone 5/6 those babies reseed freely!! I found 11 seedlings!

Thank you for this! My kids' Grandma had me pull some peonies out of her garden for a sister I think one year and I missed a few. The next year I dug those up and she sent them home with me.... And they haven't bloomed last year or this year. The leaves seem healthy and it has gotten bigger, so I think I am just in that first 3 years at this point. Was really concerned that I had screwed something up and they weren't going to make it. Since she is gone now, that would be very sad. I even got her bag of bone meal to help fertilize them in the spring. 💚🌺💚

It’s normal for them to develop it at the end of the season, just cut them back each fall and remove the foliage to prevent it from spreading :)

I read recently that ornamental alliums are good companion plants for the peonies as the foliage on the alliums is already dying back when the peonies start to put on their mass of leaves. What do you think of this pairing?
@mal1090
Жыл бұрын
My peonies were already fully leafed out and budded up when my alliums were blooming. And my peonies are so big that they would have dwarfed my ambassador alliums. I underplanted my alliums with coneflower/echinacea and I recommend this! It gives you late spring - late fall blooms in the same spot. If you underplant your alliums and peonies you won’t have any blooms past late spring.

@@mal1090 I am thinking of planting the giant globemasters so they should be OK for height, but good point about the smaller ones, I won't plant those in that location. The alliums and peonies are in my spring garden (backyard), I have a separate summer garden (front yard) where my dahlias etc. are. I only grow flowers to sell so there is hardly ever anything blooming anyway, I cut it all, my property is too small to leave any on the plants - except for the dahlias and sweet peas. Thanks so much for responding, it will keep me from planting all but the giant alliums with the peonies, much appreciated.

Can you still pluck off the peony ball if it has been left to bloom-out within the 3 year period? I haven't plucked off the little buds as they were coming on but have just left them and they are almost ready to bloom but if its beneficial to still cut them off at the "almost blooming" stage then I'll do that right away, thanks so much:)

What zone are you? And are you northern hemisphere? You should get them in the ground no matter what, but if you’re a low zone like 3,4,5 you may be okay if you’re having spring weather still. But perhaps plant them somewhere shadier. It’s hard for unestablished plants to grow in summer heat. I recommended heavily amending the soil with compost and root improving fertilizing (like Biotone). The goal is to get established roots and a little green growth for photosynthesis so they’ll have enough energy to survive the winter. If your temps are already in the 90s like us (zone 6A 😭💔) it may be tough on them. Hopefully you got them on super clearance if a retailer is selling bareroots this late in the season. PS I recommend peony bareroots from Gilbert H Wild and Sons, Eden Brothers and Longfield Gardens! They do an awesome job of shipping during your growing period :)

Hi! I am in zone 3 in Canada. This has been a great spring, we are in the 90F for quite some time. I got eight bare roots for $20 so it won’t be that much of a loss, but I really wanted them. I have four established plants in my yard. I will follow you advice and plant them in a shadier place and will buy more bare roots in the fall. Thanks!!!

Dig it up in the fall when the leaves are dead for the season. If you break off or cut some pieces it will still be fine. That’s how bare root peonies are sold, they are just cut up pieces of root with 3-5 eyes.

I screwed up last year and had year 1 peonies (no blooms) growing but dumped 2” of compost on all my beds, not thinking about the fact I was raising the level of soil around the peonies. Can I just gently dig like 12” around each peony to lower the soil level around it, or do I have to dig them up and replant higher?

Ants aren’t harmful to them, just let them be. When you cut turn the flower upside down and shake gently but by the time it blooms most have already left.
