So happy I came across your video for 2 reasons. I love the Ruth Stout method and I'm doing a very similar experiment using straw, buckets and potatoes. I put straw at the bottom of the bucket as my drainage or filler material. I gave my tat's some comfrey leaves chopped up, blood meal and kelp. I watched one video where they trenched potatoes and put comfrey leaves right over the spuds, what??? like won't the leaves rot or get slimy, I guess it works. Wish you the best harvest! I hope it does better than last years buckets but I also didn't fertilize and not enough watering.

I'm also hoping for a better harvest this year! Got some irrigation set up for my containers and hoping my auto watering system will give me more time for other things like fertilizing! Thanks for stopping by the channel - happy gardening!

Do you water the taters with the straw on top or do you move the straw??

I just water through the straw and it works well at absorbing water and retaining moisture.

Bird nesting - layer of straw, layer of dirt, rinse and repeat till full. Allows for more oxygen to get to the root zone and less chance of waterlogging.

The rest are average sizes and blessings ...we use fish emulsion as fertilizer and the seem to love it
