I don't get the comments "Excellent English" or "Wow she can speak really well and sounds like someone from an elite school." By making these comments, you are already stereotyping that people from lower income families/living in rental flats/from regular schools cannot communicate well, or have a good grasp of the English language as those from the middle or higher class. Let's just appreciate the fact that this girl is smart, matured and level-headed. And most definitely inspiring.

@@nineplustentwentyone26 Highfalutin motherhood statement. Is there some metric which you can apply and verify this idea of "fair chance"? The answer is no. Sure you can hide in endless squabbles over the definition of "fair". The fact is children of doctors become doctors, and children of lawyers become lawyers, the meritocracy is mostly "manufactured". Those parents who have knowledge of an industry and financial means buy the appropriate education for the kid. It's not possible for a hawker's children to have equal odds of becoming a doctor compared to doctor's children. Occasionally we have a few exceptions and we parade and trumpet it all over the place perhaps pretending these are not exceptions. Let there be no hypocrisy about this.

When i went to university, ppl said to me point blank, "Malay boys go university for what?". There is so much deconstruction and unconditioning that I have to do to actually be able to see myself as someone different than how society sees me. It can be an alienating journey, but it is important to take pride in where we come from because while it may not be held in high esteem, or glamorous or luxuries, it took generations to get us here. We can honour our roots by exceeding the expectations others have of us. It is our power to redefine who we are and what we can contribute in this world. I hope everyone in the world, despite race or level of affluence finds that power to be free and to be of service to others. Ultimately, that power is Love.

Exactly. There are enough people to do the hating part for us. We should focus on loving ourselves and what we have. The origins and background of a person should not be a decisive factor to where an individual ends up in life. Now chances are amazing opportunities may not pop up easily like for that of wealthy class but still being resourceful and making best use of what you have is a good habit and mindset leading to a happier life ofc wealth also comes with it.

Coming from low-income families, it's tough. And it will only be tougher when families worked hard and move up to the next income bracket. Once out of the low-income bracket, families will no longer qualify for various financial assistance (e.g. public rentals, bursaries & allowances, etc.). As such, they are incurring additional expenditures (e.g. renting from private market, groceries spendings, etc.). Ultimately, their net disposable income remains unchanged and perhaps, deteriorates as their spending increases. Sadly, this might be one of the many reasons that families find it difficult and/or unmotivated to work their way up.

I had lots of fun interacting with the kids there. Some we very vocal, some were shy, just like any other kid. One thing I noticed is their closeness to each other. The kampung spirit is very much alive with them. There were like 50 kids, some were siblings or cousins, but the rest are their neighbors and schoolmates. You could see that they genuinely care for each other. They're mostly teens by now and I hope they are doing well.
