Tim, your video resonated with SO many of my recent questions, thoughts and experiences. I am wrapping up 30 years in education, with over two decades as a digital learning specialist working mainly with adult learners. Next year we will be moving to another state, so I decided it’s time for a career change. Your graphic displaying all of the possible skill areas related to instructional design prompted me to laugh heartily! That is exactly where I am. I am enrolled in a graduate certificate program that should provide key foundational understanding, but I know I need to build my technical skills with common ID tools. I have deep expertise with digital tools in education that do not appear on that slide. :-) I believe I will develop skills quickly, but there are so many paths I could pursue. I am a motivated learner, and I really appreciate the broad advice you provided in this video. I think I need to dabble and find out what captures my passion. I will leave my website and LinkedIn profile for later, after I build tangible skills in new domains. Btw, I used Authorware to create an interactive CD of middle school multimedia projects in the late 90's… I heard you mention it on a podcast interview :-)

Tim, your advice is right on the money. I've been in the digital space since 2011, and I feel more than ever it's like trying to keep up with a runaway train. This industry feeds the imposter syndrome, which personally I feel I will always have. Thank you for providing clarity and light which has shifted my current mindset as a search for my next employment. One thing that sets you apart is you talk about the emotional side, our thoughts, concerns, and insecurities we might have as you talk about your own journey through your career, which helps reassure us all that we are not alone.

Thank you! I needed to hear these things; that it's okay to work on the things I'm passionate about and essentially become my best me. I love designing and digging into the behind the scenes to polish and present fun, interactive, visually stimulating online learning activities. You are inspiring!!!

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I want to have a vision when I am starting with my ID work. I have a PhD in biology and am teaching as an adjunct. While, the tenure is rare all over the world, I want to be in academia and make my small contribution towards it. It is just that at the moment, I am not sure about the progress of the IDs professional path. I mean not the transition from junior to senior to manager position but in terms of work and growth opportunities. I would love to hear your thoughts on "how do you see yourself progressing after you start working as an ID?" Thanks again for your time.

Thanks for watching and commenting! This is a great question. Let me give it some thoughts and I'll see if there's a video in that idea I can post in the future. With that said, I'd encourage you to connect with Jamiee Kubatske, Kathleen Volk, and/or Jim Brown. All of them have background in academia and have sine transitioned into ID. I'm sure they can provide some insights. Jamiee also has a background in biology. Here are links for where you can learn more about them: Jaimee: elearningacademy.io/academy/student-stories/jaimee-kubatzke/ Kathleen: elearningacademy.io/academy/student-stories/kathleen-volk/ Jim: elearningacademy.io/academy/student-stories/jim-brown/

Any tips in shifting from UX to Learning Experience Design. I have a MSc in psychology and PhD in "Educational Science" and my thesis was on multimedia learning/attention guiding via signaling. On that project I also worked on the development of an LMS for 5 years plus other 5 years in a UXR and consumer insight's company. Now I really want to go back to e-learning, but I can only find ID jobs that obviously will not accept a wide experience but not completely focused on ID.

My best suggestion would be to find out how your UX skills can be adapted to LXD...and then work to create samples of work that demonstrate that. That's the thing that will help hiring managers see how your skills apply.
