Atelier Bruno Paulin Lopez, is an award-winning master artisan, renowned for his exceptional work, specializing in traditional period upholstery, upholstery conservation and bespoke upholstered furniture. In this talk he discusses the craft of upholstery, in particular he will focus on the evolution of French Upholstery from Louis XV to Art Deco and beyond.
Further, he describes how the French upholstery trade was, and still is, part of the cultural societal construct. He will explain how it was influenced by fashion throughout its different French monarchs and head of States.
This lecture demonstrates, through a series of illustrations, the various style of French upholstery as well as the evolution of the craft; its techniques, materials, tools and how generations of craftsmen, artisans and designers develop new approaches to meet the ever-evolving demands of their designer contemporaries.
Born in Paris, after graduating, Bruno Paulin Lopez worked in different high end upholstery shops throughout Paris, including securing a position at the Ritz Hotel, Place Vendome, fabricating, managing and maintaining the different stylistic decors throughout the hotel. In the early 80's Mr. Paulin Lopez moved to the United States. He quickly established himself as a traditional continental upholsterer. His private clientele includes award winning architects, interior design firms and celebrity clients.
His collaborations with The Cincinnati Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of the City of New York, The Neue Galerie, The Abraham Lincoln House, The Morris Jumel Mansion in New York City, and The Park Avenue Armory (where he was presented with an interior restoration award for his work in the Veteran's room), sealed his reputation for historical interior restoration.
He recently re-created the 1810 interiors of The Morris Jumel Mansion, curating all window treatments and the Empire style furniture, as well as being the resident Upholsterer for The Park Avenue Armory curating various 19th Century upholstered pieces, notably a rare set of chairs designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany.
