*UPDATE 2* - Many people have questioned how this test was run, a few thoughts on that... 1. These are OEM prebuilt machines, not custom builds. The RAM speeds are what they are, they cannot be changed in any way. This is what you get with a Dell or Acer machine. 2. This test is meant to show real world use, what to expect when you buy a basic OEM computer and use it as it comes, dropping a $150 basic GPU into it (the GTX 1050 TI). 3. Yes, I'm well aware that a GTX 1080 would remove GPU performance limits and show a larger difference, but so what, no one actually installs that into these types of computers (or they shouldn't), this is the sort of card that actually gets used in them. 4. This test is not meant to show if the CPU generation matters in ALL cases, it is ONLY testing BF1 on these CPUs with the GTX 1050 TI, full stop. Nothing more or less. People have been reading more into it than is there.

what ram u have ddr3 or ddr4 ?
@Xbox360bbb

DDR3 for the Sandy and Haswell. Skylake is the only generation that supports DDR4 because it's so new. Intel's 5th generation supports DDR4 as well as DDR3 just as long as you get the motherboard that supports whatever standard you're looking for.

*UPDATE* - I have installed the EVGA GTX 1060 SC 6GB card into the $400 Acer Aspire T desktop using the included 2x MOLEX to 1x 6-pin PCI-E power and so far it is running well. I'm playing World of Warships on it right now, but I'll test Battlefield 1 tonight and see how it runs and report back on that... *NOTE* - While the GTX 1060 runs fine on the 300 watt included power supply, a RX 470 will likely require replacing the power supply given its higher power consumption. I'll try it, but I suspect it will draw too much power, I'll let you know what the Kill-a-Wall says it is pulling from the wall...

I have a question Tech Deals I was getting the EVGA GTX 1060 SC 6GB that you recommended in your video and it is $264.99 Amazon and Newegg it has 1 fan and the EVGA GTX 1060 SSC 6GB is $269.99 on Amazon and Newegg it has 2 fans do you think it is worth it to pay the 5 bucks and get the SSC edition with the 2 fans? I'm just trying to make two little upgrades to my PC by adding this graphics card and upgrading my RAM to 16GB. I'm just not sure If I should get the SSC for $5 more or just get the SC also I won't be manually overclocking either card I will just be running on the out of the box clock speeds.

Out of curiosity. Doesn't different game tax the GPU vs the CPU differently. Like some games use the CPU more than GPU and some use GPU more than CPU and in those cases where the CPU is more used by the game it might have made a bigger difference or not ??? I'm no expert so I'm asking out of curiosity if that would be the case? I have no idea if BF1 is a CPU or GPU heavy game? From what I've heard BF1 is ver well optimized and runs well on many systems and don't demand as much as other new games do. I dont play FPS/First Person Shooter (not fps as in frames per second) Games much myself but more into MMO RPG's, peferably older tab target ones like LoTRO, GW2 and STO, as I'm not a fan of MMO RPG's using battle system like Black Desert do and try to be an FPS Game. I'm also into Turnbased Strategy like Civilization. Still this would be intersting to test how much different various generations of chops would matter in games that are taxing the CPU more than the GPU. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I not sure if you played the same maps with each CPU, but I'm certain the map would be a variable in these tests. Testing each CPU on separate maps would be an example of poor methodology. I think using a more powerful GPU would also bottleneck the CPUs more, which would better highlight the performance differences of each generation (or possibly the lack of performance change). But I do understand the GTX 1050ti is the more "realistic" GPU to use in an older system such as that Dell. I feel this video better exemplifies what its like to upgrade on old system with a new CPU than it does to compare the CPU generations.

Thanks for pointing out the point that these are pre-built systems you're using. I recently bought myself an Asus M32CD tower a while back and so far installed an extra 8 GB of DDR4 RAM in it (The CPU is a i5 Skylake). I was looking for a suitable graphics card to add in there without fiddling with the wires or replacing my power supply and the GTX 1050 Ti seemed a lot more easier to deal with for just installing the card itself. I'm not really a gamer much anymore (almost Middle Aged) but I like to max out the potential of my system without going completely overboard on the specs.

I think that you are completely right with your use of the 1050ti instead of a 1080, it would be like if you wanted to test consumer grade motor oil and then you used a sports car because it would "eliminate bias from the engine". For those wondering what would happen if we swap the graphics cards to a GTX 1080 or anything higher. Then you'll see overall higher FPS on the 6400 as it's a newer generation with much better IPC. Obviously at 1080p with ultra settings all these CPUs will be pegged at 100% and the GPU Utilization will most likely be not stable at 99% but at 4K then we should see lower CPU Usage and consistent 99% GPU Utilization.

I think the thing to address is the difference between i7 and i5 in this game. I have played this game on 9 different processors out of curiosity. I played on a i5 7600k, an fx 6300, a i5 4570, an i7 5820k, and an i7 2nd gen i7, and a xeon six core x79 (can't remember) for examples. The game play difference between i7 and i5 was huge, experience wise. In fact the fx 6300 played smoother than the i5s which was shocking because they are by no means superior processors. I feel like Battlefield 1 is a whore for cpu power and threads, I have seen this game played on low end gpus with high end processors and it's weird how this game acts compared to other titles.

Could you re-run this test with a 1060 (one with the 6-Pin connector) and maybe add a 1st gen i5 (7XX) or even a C2Q for to showcase where the Bottleneck would be and how serious it is? I think a lot of people would actually pick the 3gb 1060 over the 1050Ti, since it can easily be powered from "weak" PSU and a single 2x4pin to 6pin (or 2x Sata to 6pin?) shouldn't be an issue even on OEM PSU, since they usually have enough headroom. Come to think of it... I have no clue why Fujitsu Siemens planted a 700w PSU that Workstation thingy I recently picked up for 25€, it draws about 300w during stresstesting and those meanies didn't think of future gaming use back in 2007 - meaning it has no PCIe connector.

How are you getting such good performance. My i5 7400 is constantly at 100% bottlenecking my 1050ti which only runs at 80% sometimes dropping to 60%

how bout i5 3470 3.20Ghz, 3601mhz and gigabyte h61m-s2p r3 1155 can run GPU 1060 6gb - 1070 8gb - 1080 8gb?

Should be able to run one of them depending on your case and PSU.

Great video as usual. Maybe adding charts instead of just the text would make it easier to visualize the results. Just a suggestion. Here's an example postimg.org/image/6itfpht8t/

Interesting. I just recently updated my PC from a HDD/GTX570 to SSD/RX480 all running on the 2400. The biggest difference is the HDD I reckon (it was full and clunky) but definitely feel like a Ryzen/Kaby Lake is due soon for me too

You should've done the benchmarks on the same map

I like your benchmark it more realistic configuration. Nice performance when your on budget. You also made a good point don't need the latest and the greatest processor to get good performance.

Just started watching your videos and like them a lot, will subscribe, nice to see a professional review of PC products without heavy accents, idiot music playing in the background, kids who can't speak proper English and put two sentences together properly and last but not least....making the video all about them, you know, normal millennial stuff.

Would a GTX 1060 perform better than the 1050 to in the 2400 machine

I enjoy your videos and liked this one. The only thing is that a 1050 Ti, at 1080p and a high level of settings, is going to be the bottleneck in performance no matter what isn't it? So really this video is about how if you have an i5 2400 or equivalent CPU, the 1050 Ti is all the videocard you can use, at least in BF1. This is actually the perspective I'd like to see more of, where is the point of diminishing returns when pairing CPU with GPU? Most reviewers usually focus on sheer speed comparisons, ie here's a breakdown of a bunch of videocards and how fast they are compared to each other. But rarely does anyone say "If you have this level of CPU, this is the fastest card it makes sense to buy". This video IS saying it, and proving it.

I just wanted to correct what I wrote in my first post. This video does not show that the 1050 Ti is the most powerful videocard an i5 2400 can make use of. I was so eager to ask for more 'which GPU is the most you need for a given CPU?" videos that I screwed up and put the focus on the CPU. Just because the 1050 Ti is doing as much as it can in this game doesn't mean the 2400 is.

hi, would the i5 2400 with the gtx1050ti run satisfactory the fsx or p3d? would it really be a big difference compared with an i7 7700k with gtx1060 for flight simulation? thank you for your help! I appreciate that!

Could you run this 1050 TI test with an i3 3220 and other i3's please. Would be a good video for very budget guys like myself. I would love to see what happens.

dont understand how the i5 2400 usage is between 80-95% and my i5 3350p is always at 100% and never drops, while gpu usage stays between 40-60%. i know its a bottleneck, but wondering how the 2400 isnt bottlenecking the 1050 ti.

The CPU is probably waiting for the GPU, this would reverse if I put a more powerful GPU in, which I might well end up doing...

If these CPUs were running stock clocks... I would understand why 2400 can pull ahead as it would be fastest in term of frequency (not IPC). I wonder how that @3.1 GHz was made... with Turbo disabled or not. But in such low frame rates processor speed is negligible, same with memory speed - both factors that would make a different story in test with high end GPU like 1070+

You are talking about quad core processors, what about intel q9550 with the same specs....does it bottleneck or still be able to use like i5 2400.

Hello Tech Deals, i have a doubt. With this configuration: "i5-4440 + GA-B85M-D3PH + GTX 1050 ti Zotac OC 4GB GDDR5 + 16GB RAM DDR3 on 1366x768 resolution monitor (16:9)" i can get 60fps on ULTRA on BATTLEFIELD 1? In the future I think of getting a GTX 1060 6GB or a RX 470 4GB to play BATTLEFIELD 1 in 1920x1080.
