401k has two types: before and after tax. "Before tax type": you don't income pay tax now, and invest it in (usually) stocks, and will pay tax when you starting withdraw at retirement. The "after tax type" is recently launched, and relative new. You pay tax now, and will not pay any tax on the investment that grows over years. The government will not touch it no matter what.
