It's always a treat to hear people talk about Animorphs! For a second I thought our wiki was wrong when Julie said Cassie was acquired 3 times instead of twice, but then there was a sigh of relief when she redacted it 😆

Just found out this video : Sporadic Phantoms is arguably THE BEST animorphs-related content i ever found, it's very well written, the tension is sky-high all the time, it's clearly a must ! Especially if you're an avid animorph fan, and that you get all the easter eggs and references, you'll surprise yourself to try to locate where precisely in the animorphs time-line every episode is, keep track of which known-characters we met (mainly the 6 animorphs, but not only...), and, most of all, die laughing at the "these-messages" in every episodes 🤣 It's nice to be able to put faces on the voices !

I was the exact target age when Animorphs came out and it became a childhood obsession. I felt pretty much the same way about those books that Julie did. These characters were my friends, and I too was in a secret war to fight the yeerks. I was one of the few kids my age who didn't care about Harry Potter because I was head over heels for Animrophs. I actually went back this past year and reread the series for the first time since I was kid. I remembered the big beats but I'd forgotten a lot of the individual moments of how truly enrapturing and grim this series could get. These days you'll hear people talk about old media and say things like "This could never be made today." A lot of the time it's nonsense. But Animorphs...I have absolutely no idea how you pitch a series like that today, keeping true to its style and themes and willingness to "go there" while keeping it at the target reading level and get it accepted. Truly an icon of its time.

As a 2000s kid I'm surprised that the books apparently weren't in public libraries during their heyday, because they were certainly at my local libraries when I was growing up. I read the books largely out of order, but I did read almost all of them, and since I got into it well after the series had wrapped up I didn't have to worry about outgrowing it before reaching the end... but I made a conscious decision to never read the last book because I knew it was a downer ending. Looking back I wish I hadn't been so weak and had finished the full series

I had a discussion with a friend about Animorphs where we came to the conclusion that it'd be far more fondly remembered if it were about the team getting different psychic abilities (telepathy, pyrokinsis, etc) rather than morphing into animals. As Kevin mentioned, that's SUCH a hurdle for readers. Sidenote: I video taped myself doin Jake's VHS exclusive monolog as a kid.

Upon reread it's pretty wild how integral the animal morphing feature is to the beginning of the series, even to the point of prompting philosophical quandaries, but towards the end it's just what these characters do. It got kinda comical in the final books how they had to work to squeeze in new animals for the kids to morph since that was on the surface what these books were supposedly about.
