All guard retention techniques focus on leg position and, at their core, keeping your legs between you and your partner. In this session Shintaro and I look at 3 situations: first, dealing with a no gi toreando variation, where you lose the battle for the kneeline; next, when your back is exposed from either toreando or a kneecut; and finally when you find yourself on the end of a leg drag. In each of these, we use both our upper and lower body to regain the inside position, manage the distance and get back to a place where we can begin to attack.
There always are a number of retention methods you’ll use during the course of a training session, so becoming familiar with the core methods for maintaining distance, recovering from back exposure and dealing with a dragged leg will be very important the more you work your open guard.
