Gilberto raised cattle and sheep in silvopastoral systems with several species of trees, shrubs, and herbs, as well as planting and managing cactus in a diversified system. For Gilberto, a good life is staying on the farm, in the forest, having good air, away from pollution, and in front of a preserved area, he said his world view, “we don’t have the land, we only take care of it, we work on top of it to survive. Everything we need is here, we just live on the land, so we do not have anything, we are just dust of it.” When he bought the farm in 1999, he reported it was treeless, but just allowing the natural tree regeneration, never fertilizing or irrigating, at the visit most of it was a silvopasture. In addition, to recover degraded/compacted soil, he was using low-cost methods to increase the plants’ productivity. The cactus plantation shown by Gilberto was managed organically and in a diversified system. The areas which had cactus previously were fully covered by vegetation, used for hay production, or as grazing areas. Gilberto said it was raining less than when he was young (his age was in the range of 50-60). He reported in the past, every 60 days he used to collect honey, but not anymore. In order to assure water security, mainly for his animals, the farmer considered the use of social technologies for water storage as very important. Gilberto’s dream was to see something showing up to make his situation better as the Brazil he wanted was one that looked at the rural producer.
