On June 17, 2008, Barcelona presented Pep Guardiola as their new coach. After a season in the subsidiary, with which he was promoted to the Second Division, the board was betting on a coach with no experience in the elite but who represented the recovery of Cruyfism.
Guardiola wanted to clean up the dressing room and in his first press conference he made it clear that he did not have Deco, Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o, although he would eventually have to have the Cameroonian striker.
After a disappointing start to the season, Guardiola gave more and more prominence to homegrown players like Busquets and Pedro and the Pep Team machinery began to work. The Catalans began to play excellent football and after several days leading the table, they gave the league a blow by winning 2-6 against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The Catalans won the first trophy of the year after beating Athletic 4-1 in the Copa del Rey final and in the Champions League they completed an almost perfect tournament. Guardiola's men thrashed Lyon and Bayern Munich before the epic Iniestazo at Stamford Bridge. In the final in Rome, Barça played to the rhythm of Viva la Vida and won their third Champions League after beating Manchester United 2-0.
Barça won a spectacular treble and the following season would round off Guardiola's first project with a magical Sextet, lifting the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
Is Guardiola's Barça the Best Team in History?
