Spicy specs for Rick & cute baby sidewinder for Marissa. Yay! I MUST look into what species live next door in the permanent open space by us. I don't get close enough to see details when I encounter snakes on the trails (or didn't, back when I was able bodied & doing easy hikes). We have perfect habitat!! LOTS of giant rock formations with plenty of nooks & crannies. Pack rat nests, brush piles, etc. All protected from development. Homes built in '60's here. Blessings, RSS team!!

When I want to go somewhere new, I always search for information about the kinds of snakes, predators, insects, etc. the area has to know what is and is not dangerous. So, going out to discover and document is awesome. And appreciated. 👍😎👍

Yes when I was a kid I went out hunting for garter snakes and salamanders and some snapping turtles. It was always fun and finding a snake was a big treat. We knew they didn’t bite or at least didn’t have fangs, so we pick them up with our hands. They usually ended up shitting on us when you held onto them too long. Hazards of the hunt. Keep on putting out good videos and you’ll have me hooked all the time. Mike from Montreal.

It wasn't snakes when I was a kid (though I did enjoy seeing any) - it was butterflies. Still do go out on butterfly and bird walks/hikes (with my dog). Saw a young FL softshell turtle prostrate on some hot pavement in the middle of a car park the other evening and helped it off the pavement and nearer the lake it was turned towards. Used to hike in copperhead territory and was always mindful of them but never actually saw one (probably because I was being mindful to steer clear of their favorite rock and log formations.) The rattlesnakes you show us are beautiful. I never knew there could be so many colors.

I have 5 Imported German Shepherds. They are trained but if anyone has experience with German Shepherds, they would know they use their noses and will lock onto a scent and search it out not hesitating to stick their noses into places that have snakes. We currently live in CO and only have garter snakes 🐍 and I have taught them to "leave it" so in the 25+ years we have lived in this area, I have only had 1 German Shepherd vs Garter incident. We are now getting ready to move to rural TX, where my dogs will have several acres to explore. I have spent the last year cramming like a college student on the venomous snakes and insects in TX that we may encounter. It has been important for me to learn about the habitats so I am no creating them accidentally and all of the things I can do to prevent them living near my house and dogs. Growing up, even though it was a very common snake, the only venomous snake where we lived was the Prairie Rattlesnake. It will be a challenge to learn to spot a venomous snake that doesn't rattle. 😮

@Shin90x

Are they in az?
@MountainFisher
Жыл бұрын
@@Shin90x Yes, they inhabit near the southern border of South California (uncommon) to Florida. Just draw a straight line about 80 miles north of the Mexican border in CA to the Atlantic coast and that is pretty much the range of Coral Snakes. Although uncommon and shy they do inhabit the AZ deserts, we have them here in NM.

Back in the early 1970s two friends and I made money by selling rattlesnakes for $5 to a laboratory in SoCal that made antivenin specifically for each species of rattler. They do not all have the same type of venom so knowing the type is important, or at least it was then and I'm sure still is. We'd go down to the Alabama Hills area near Lone Pine and nearby likely rattlesnake habitat. We'd range further south sometimes if it was too cold further North. I remember we asked a lady if we could check under her mobile home and we found 8 Mohave rattlesnakes, better known as Mohave Greens, it was the only name we knew them by. They were worth more, like $8 and were wintering in some crates under the mobile home. Seriously most tried to get away, but some went on the offensive, not something you want under a mobile home. I've only seen big diamondbacks get that way when cornered. Luckily we took blankets with us to throw over them and I remember there was a lot of yelling. The lady totally freaked out when she saw how many we caught, she had three kids in school. She asked if they were baby snakes as the Greens run small and we told her nope they're full grown and being young and too dumbass to know better we told her they have the worst venom of all rattlesnakes. They are also very likely to be aggressive to humans or pets in their space as we found out the first time we caught one, it didn't try to wiggle away. I personally let snakes be, especially irritable rattlesnakes, but $5 to $8 was a lot of money back then and it was for a good cause, but it still gave me the Heebie-Jeebies. Do the antivenin labs still take some from the wild to prevent inbreeding them? Anyone Know?

What is broadcast: man commits animal abuse by attempting to smother, versus the other idiots who are accepting it as ADVICE for how to treat rattlesnake encounters.
