1.) vitamin k (or else too much calcium floating in the arteries) and e (slows down inflammation) is super important 2.) MUST have magnesium - without this may trigger anxiety; allows you too poop better thus, lose more weight 3.) keep note that the point of keto is to get ketones only to manage INFLAMMATION. which does you no good in the long run if you eat inflammatory foods that are nutrient deficient. 4.) dairy is not created equal and bad dairy contains has --> opioid like effects that makes you addicted and inflammatory effects. (personal thoughts --> its fine but in smaller amounts since it triggers my pimples and other problems) 5.) Gut bacteria: there's a bad bacteria that's triggered on dirty keto that actually also helps store fat and may get you to gain weight 6.) Gut bacteria: on a cleaner diet you would encourage growth of the good kind that will help lower inflammation and lose more weight. lower level of this bacteria can cause depression due to lack of fiber

I found the keto cheap friendly things (cheaper veggies, Costco chicken, & berries) that are as healthy as I can get so I get a lot of the vitamins & minerals without breaking the bank. I do like that Thomas has been recently doing his shopping trips, which has helped open my eyes a bit. However, if time is short & I'm getting dinner for my family at McDonalds, I'm getting a bunless McDouble or two.

"Dirty keto" to keep the entry barrier lower for people who are new to this; "clean keto" for those with more experience. Unfortunately, all this emphasis on grass-fed beef etc. make a ketogenic diet appear expensive to people from the outside - more expensive than it actually is. And in addition to that, it might seem elitist and/or overly complicated to those people, too. I wouldn't be surprised if these things deter quite a few people who are genuinely interested in keto.
@angryagain68

Amen! Had I watched this video before I started, I would have just walked away from it for the reasons you mentioned. "Elitist and overly complicated" at the top of the list. I'm down 22 lbs in three months. (And that is on top of the 15 I lost and then plateaued on from a reduced-calorie diet I was on before starting Keto.) Glad I just jumped in as-is. I can adjust the diet on the fly. Clean it up here and there as I go and learn. Thomas is a wealth of information, but he has a tendency to throw in too much techno-jargon that is just plain over most people's heads.

Good thing he made a disclosure at the beginning which already stated that you'll be better off doing dirty keto than nothing, but hes also showing how good clean keto can be whenever you're ready to dip into it. The problem is people dont hear that, they think they're gonna be judged and then they don't even try, maybe those people need to do some more of their own research, Thomas isn't the only source for keto info, if people are serious then they'll start dirty if they have to. do what you can do, nothing wrong with him sharing the good clean info for those of us who dont have 12 kids or low paying jobs or in bad situations, but dirty keto is also fine.

I always saw dirty versus clean as a spectrum. When I started, I was very "dirty" but over time as I got used to the diet, I incorporated more and more clean options. I may have started 95% dirty, but now I'm only 70%, and I'll keep improving. I just knew I needed to start somewhere, and I figured it better to start dirty than not at all. I doubt I'll ever be 100% clean 100% of the time, but thats not my goal really. Continuous smart improvement is. /shrug

I've found if you start paying attention to portions, this offsets the cost of the clean keto. The hardest hit in the check book is if you go load up on everything you think you need. The difference was that people were a lot more active and they didnt sit around eating nonstop and snacking all the time, they have good sized meals and then went on with their days working and such, carbs act as an extra energy source, so they burned the carbs off, sugar in fruit helped to fatten people up for the winter and activity while also giving them vitamins and minerals and fiber, that's why people were better off, people get mad at me at the gas station I work at cause they gotta walk across the parking lot for their receipt, that's why you need to add workouts nowadays cause many dont get enough natural activity anymore, AND they overeat, AND a lot of food is processed and messed with, even the natural foods.

Vitamin K is found in the following foods: Green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, turnip greens, collards, Swiss chard, mustard greens, parsley, romaine, and green leaf lettuce. Grass fed meat and butter. Vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Fish, liver, meat, eggs have a little bit too.

I LOVE the scientific elements in your videos. To me, knowing the exact in's and out's of what keto does in the body helps me become more successful at my diet plans. However, most people, and even people like me sometimes, would prefer a boiled down TL:DR at the end (or beginning) of the video. I'm talking something like "Here's all the science of the blah, blah, blah... Ok, now here's what that actually looks like" and then have a whole display of stuff on that kitchen table behind you, a list like "Examples of dirty keto are blah, blah, blah... And examples of clean keto to get these specific nutrients are blah, blah, blah..." Dirty keto is a great way to start out removing yourself from the SAD diet, but dirty keto isn't just Wendy's burgers with no bun, there are things eaten at home that fall into that realm (and work great for cheat days!) Clean keto is a natural progression once you become more adept (and makes you feel AMAZING) but unless it's a salmon salad with coconut oil, olive oil, avocado and some greens, I don't really know what else my options are and what different meals look like. Please, please, PLEASE do a TL:DR video that showcases what dirty/clean keto LOOKS like and not just the science on it. I really think this would help a lot of people out who aren't science driven as much as they are results driven.

But I like the higher quality eggs and cheese. Still Wholefood, meal prep Keto... just not too into the grass-fed leaner tasting meat. I try my best to eat at home when I can on keto. Frozen vegetables are also cheap and easy to get if you’re on a budget. If I do get fast food, I go to Chipotle. Most of the places I like aren’t as good without the bun. The only burger place I like is Elevation Burger (in Maine) They use grass fed meat and have some good keto options.

This finally explained why I kept getting frustrated with Keto and quiting it, dirty keto throws my gut bacteria off and I get depressed. I bought Nordic Naturals Ultamate Omega and am trying to eat as clean as I can this time. Do you recommend sticking with this supplement to help up my omega 3? I have a host of health issues and the doctors says the O3's will help with mental clarity but if there is a better way I would love to hear it.

I am grateful for the keto knowledge DeLauer puts out there to let us know what clean keto is. At the beginning, I believe a large percentage of keto dieters/IF start out dirty due to lack of resources -money, time, knowledge, etc, as many viewers have eluded to before me, overtime, we are all moving toward clean keto/IF at our own pace as we are more and more convinced by the dramatic improvement in our health and well-being ==> it's a matter of time that we all eventually become as clean as possible on an individual basis. I do everything I can to afford a clean keto on my budget by stop buying unnecessary things, for example, sometimes it's about re-arranging your financial priorities to enhance your life through clean keto.

Michelle Stratford it’s not going to hurt in my estimation... initially,: I focused a lot on making sure my meat sources and eggs were pure in so much as beef is grass fed grass finished and eggs are from cage free antibiotic free chickens dairy etc are from cows that are also grass fed etc. it’s INFORMATION over load! I’m not gonna lie! I chose one thing at a time to focus on, realizing “I’m gonna screw up here and there” he lays it all out pretty well in his guide to doing Keto! But there are times you’re like “oh crap I’m totally screwing that up!” As you learn. I look at it this way... “am I at the Taco Bell drive up window at 11 pm!?” NO!! I’m not! Anything I’m doing now that isn’t what I was doing before is vastly better. We are our worst critics!! I tell myself “ya didn’t get here over night ya aren’t going to learn this over night either! Just be as dedicated to this as you were Dunkin’ Doughnuts and you’ll be golden!” I’m more than happy to assist in any way possible though I am not sure how to exchange personal info via KZitem but if there is a way I’m more than happy to help if you so desire.

If the clean keto diet and grass fed/organic products are too pricey for you - go on a treasure hunt and try bin diving at your local organic and more 'progressive' grocers. It might sound gross to you, but once you try it and realize how much fresh food is wasted, shopping for food will never be the same... I've been diving for 3 years, have almost never had to buy food unless I really need something, and I frequently find top quality products - all the veggies, smoked salmon, avocados, cheeses, pre-prepared meals and salads, eggs and bacon... and much more. I've never been sick (may even be because it's improved my resistance due to exposure) but just BE CAUTIOUS and use your senses to smell and determine freshness. Read the labels - also check whether products have been defrosted or possibly left there for more than a day and so on. Your senses should give you the best idea, but generally vacuum-sealed and other properly sealed packages remain fresh well after the 'use-by dates' which is a fabricated marketing tactic to sell more stock anyway. Good luck :)

""Jumping over dollars to save nickels" and "extra couple bucks." A pack of 18 eggs is usually just over a dollar while a dozen pasture raised is around 5. That's way more then a couple of bucks. While grass fed beef is twice (sometimes more) as non grass fed, that definitely adds up. What's clean keto on a budget bc clean keto is expensive as shit keto.

@Sara a 100$ for 5 people? in Canada it is that for one person a week and no luxury items, I even only eat one meal a day, I cannot afford the Thomas way of eating as it would be a minimum of 250$ a week for one person. Dairy products are an extreme luxury here, as cheese is about 50$ a pound and good cheese is about 65 to 70$ a pound, meat is 55$ a pound for the regular stuff, grass feed is around 80$ a pound, vegetables are also very expensive.

Dirty Keto is Big Business keto. Dirty Keto is highly processed keto. Dirty Keto is lowering the amount of carbs you give your body, but keeping your mind addicted to the sweetness/dopamine rush. Dirt keto is people who say they can’t afford grass finished beef, but will spend $30 for a box of “keto” cereal. Dirty Keto is just another diet. You’ll lose weight but you won’t get healthy. Dirty Keto, just like any other diet, requires will power, struggle and deprivation. Your mind focuses on what you “can’t have”. It’s hard work and it’s depressing. It works in the sort run, but ultimately fails. Clean Keto, on the other hand, is a fundamental change in your relationship to food. Essentially, dirty keto is Keto without the paradigm shift. As such, it is unsustainable. To me, clean keto is just easier. It’s hard to feel “deprived” when I’m dipping my celery sticks into great guacamole as a side dish to my rare ribeye.

It's understandable that one cannot go clean keto because of the higher costs that seem to burn a hole through your wallet. But honestly, implementing IF or OMAD, which helps you feel satiated longer and helps you overcome keto plateau.. it makes up for the quality, fresh foods to achieve a clean keto diet. Plus, Thomas has multiple videos on how to shop on a budget with his grocery store runs.
