Just want everyone to know if you have a bird in the house please make sure you do not turn on your oven cleaning control in the kitchen. We lost our beloved conure three days after xmas when we had the oven cleaning going. Had no idea the teflon lining will kill your bird. After only seven months he was gone. Maybe this will save someones bird.

I am so sorry to hear you lost your baby bird. Thank you for the PSA I have hearted this comment so people see it first. I hope it helps other birdies stay safe. I too have lost birds and I know how painful it can be. Their absence echoes through the house and the grief and regret is hard to get over. Please be gentle with yourself and allow yourself some grace in this difficult time. You were doing everything you knew how to do to make sure your Birdie had a good life and sometimes we just don’t know it all. 💕

@GuidetoGreenCheekConures
4 жыл бұрын
I am so glad that this video helped you decide not buy a Green Cheek. The reality is that the noise is only the beginning of the annoying things you would have to put up with for the 30 years of the bird’s life. They poop everywhere, they fling their food, they need to be with you constantly, they are nippy, they can be bullies, they are extremely intelligent and good manipulators, they often only have a few people they allow to handle them, they need fresh food and water every day, they need to be out of the cage most of all of the day, their vet bills are at least $300/year, you have to find someone to care for them when you go out of town, they get frisky and hormonal the list goes on..😂 Don’t get me wrong I love my green cheek he is a loving and devoted little friend. With all these frustrating behaviors, he’s just doing what he was designed to do, who he was meant to be in the wild. the reality is that they are meant to be in a Forrest, in a flock with a life partner, hatching chicks each year and the discrepancy between the life they are meant to have and what you can offer in a home in a city is always present for you and the bird. If people were as thoughtful about getting a bird as you have been we could eliminate or reduce the Parrot trade and find homes for the ones who have been given up by their owners. Thank you for being thoughtful and looking into this huge commitment, before just jumping in.

I have a GC and he sounds completely different! The only thing that sounds the same is maybe his biting noise? The gravely skirp skirp noise he does when he is defending his perch. Otherwise, totally different! Even his alarm call is different. He does have many of the same behaviors. but he usually preens when he's nervous. He used to be an over-preener and lost a lot of his chest feathers because he'd preen until they basically fell apart. But he got over that after we gave him some different perches high up in the house and allowed his wings to grow out, so now he's much happier.

NikTheGamer YT - is your Conure pretty new? It may take some time to feel safe to come out. Conures definitely like to have a territory that they feel is their own and they feel safe in. If there is a lot going on outside of his cage or a lot of large windows nearby he may also feel safer there. Also conures need 12 hours of sleep a night so if he gets woken up after 6 or 8 hours when the people in your house get up he is going to want to go back to his cage and have a few long naps throughout the day to try to catch up. When I am home all weekend my bird demands to be put in a dark safe spot to have a nap a couple times a day. You may also be seeing this behavior. Just some ideas as to what it could be. They all have such different personalities and different living situations it’s always hard to know for sure why an individual bird behaves a certain way. You can always tempt him out of his cage by placing his favorite treat just outside the cage 😉

@@petloveraj6284 he talks a lot so likely a male. Also, you can tell by gently feeling the breast bone until bone formation splits (or not). In a female GCC, the hip bones will be wider and rounder in order to pass eggs through their vent. In the males, the breast bone will be closer together and "sharper."

Haha so cute. I love these birds. If mine puffs her head feathers up and backs lightly you can bet she is mad lol. But luckily that is not very often. One noise that I did not see here was what I’m guessing is a mating noise? At first I though she was very agitated. But when I would scratch her neck and back she LOVED it and was making that same sound..... lol she’s my baby.

My GCC is about 8 or so years old now, is it too late to get him to stop biting? He loves head scratches when he snuggles up against me, but other than that whenever he sees my finger, such as me going to get him on my finger, he ruffles his feathers and bites at it. I usually just let him onto my shoulder and he goes back to being happy, so at this point I basically let him get away with murder 😂. Any thoughts? He has a really strong bond with me and always screeches like crazy whenever I’m not in his sight, he basically needs to be touching me to be soothed.

My green cheek’s cage is near the slow-closing kitchen trash can. He is fascinated by the trash can and climbs down his cage to get as close to it as possible to observe it every time the trash can lid is closing. Also, he has a couple of stuffed toys on top of his cage that he normally likes to snuggle up to, but if you come near his cage to use the trash can, he will play-fight with his stuffed buddies. I think he considers the trash can his property. 🧐

I wish I would have listened to my bird when it gave me that distress call. I lost my little conure two weeks ago, and I know there was probably nothing I could do once he got tangled in my hair... But I would like to think that if I had become alarmed and reacted faster that way that I might have been able to save him. That thought hurts. So I don't know why I have it. But I do. I honestly have no clue why I didn't panic when I realized he was trying to move away from me and was struggling. I wish my brain wouldn't have been so slow to catch on. Nothing I can really do about it now, though... I just really hope I don't ever have to hear that sound again. On a brighter note, you're right about the cuddles and scritches. They really do love them X3

Bo does the loud "hello, where are you, come talk to me" chirp a LOT whenever he hears someone moving around in the kitchen near my sister's room. (Her bird) LoL but you don't have the "quack" he does when he chatters back happily when he's got someone giving him attention and talking to him. Maybe it's just Bo.... lol, so I quack back. But sometimes his quack sounds like he's answering me, too. It's cute. "Did you take a bath today?" *affirmative quack* "Did you eat some food?" *quack* "Was it tasty?" *low quack* "Well, you'll have to take that up with your mommy."

I was wondering if behavior differs a lot from different types of conures? I'm thinking about getting a crimson bellied conure and I want to know if some stuff in this video applies or none of it or all of it? Did that make sense? Idk
@GuidetoGreenCheekConures
5 жыл бұрын
Chuck March - Nice question. I had to do a bit of research to try and answer this one. *please allow me to don my nerd glasses before I proceed.... 🤓 Eh hem, If you recall the order of scientific classification from Biology 101: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Green Cheeks and Crimson Bellies only diverge at the very end classification. They are part of the the same genus by the name Pyrrhura, which indicates they will likely have many similar characteristics and behaviors. However, they are different species: Green Cheeks being Pyrrhura molinae and Crimson Bellies being Pyrrhura perlata. So some variation in behaviors is definitely possible. I have never personally met a Crimson Bellied Conure, but I did go to KZitem and watch a number of videos of Crimson Bellies and did notice them looking and behaving suspiciously like a Green Cheek. I felt like I could read and predict them as I would a Green Cheek. So my guess would be that much of the behaviors you see on this video would translate quite nicely to a Crimson Belly. I think it would be okay to use this as a starting guide and follow your instincts from there. The great thing about conures in general, be they Perlata or Molinae, is that they don’t mince their message. They are great communicators and it is difficult to miss the major things they want and dislike even from day one. It’s all part of that “Big personality in a small package” you have probably been reading about. My Green Cheek has even been able to communicate his chagrin with the bird sitter when she failed to make him pancakes one morning.... 🙄 So no worries! You and your little guy (if you choose to get one) will get to know each other pretty quickly and his messages will be loud and clear. 😅 Please feel free to ask more questions if you have any. And do post a video of your little friend if you decide to make that 30 year commitment. Which, by the way, is longer than most marriages. It is awesome you are doing your research before you “take the plunge.” 😉

I saw a conure that was hand raised in the petstore and he was at first very defensive and scared but after a while of talking to him he seemed to cheer up a lot, i feel like he felt abandoned because as soon as i went to leave and look around the store he started chirping really loudly and sadly, and when the pet employee closed the door to the room he was in he started freaking out :( I couldn’t buy him because he was $500 as well as i like to research before i buy any animal and make sure I have a proper set up before i purchase them, but it broke my heart listening to him cry when i had to leave.

This is what these noises/actions mean for my green cheek: First chirp: excited or intrigued by a noise or sight Second: content and sociable (usually chit-chatting with me) Third: excited Fourth and fifth: thinking about flying Sixth: distress call, but now that my bird has learned that I respond to it, she does it for attention too (which is annoying because it’s VERY loud, so be careful not to always react to this call) Seventh: Angry (sometimes overexcited). Definitely may bite Eighth: don’t leave me call Ninth: my green cheek doesn’t do this exact motion, but she does bob her head when she’s confused by something Tenth: content, cold, or has something on her feathers Eleventh: content and sleepy Twelfth: scritches are the best Thirteenth: feels safe, content, or just really needs to clean Not exactly the same reasons for my conure, but the motions are all almost identical!

Nicole Steigerwald - yes! Agreed! I have had my conure for another year and a half since I made this video and I know him better now. So some of the meanings of his own body language and calls have changed for me too. It is striking how similarly green Cheek Conures communicate and move. Sometimes when watching manda and Rio or Ari, I could swear it was my bird I was watching on the screen.
