Guillaume de Machaut's lyrical lai Pour ce qu'on puist miex retraire (L3) is characterized by the impressive length of the poetry and the virtual absence of narrative development. The piece is an elaborate exercise in persuasion in which the darker themes of courtly love are varied tirelessly through highly refined poetic devices. Like all Machaut's other lais (with one exception), Pour ce qu'on puist miex retraire is composed of 12 stanzas; and like all his other lais, the music and rhyme scheme of the first and last stanzas are identical. Machaut can rely on the variation in verse length (between 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 syllables) and the technical innovations of the Ars Nova regarding mensural notation to build a large-scale musical structure.
