Guilty Gear is like that Underground Garage Band that's so good that only word of mouth made it bigger. With Daisuke Ishwatari's beautiful artwork, music score and voice acting- this franchise became a phenomenon in fighting game circuits and overtime has become quite the standout hit! Even today, Arc system works and artistic wizards behind the games, have further pushed the visual envelope with Dragon Ball FIGHTERZ, Granblue Fantasty VS, Blaze Blue Vs, Persona 4 Arena, Guilty Gear XRD & Sign!

This is a HUGE surprise right here. I didnt love Guilty Gear as much as i did until a couple of years ago on christmas when i gotten Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 for PS4. I played Guilty Gear X2 and X2 Accent Core Plus on PSP in 2015 and the steam version in 2016 and loved those games but i didnt get hooked until Xrd came in my life. The characters are so cool and memorable, the story is actually very enjoyable, the fighting system is complex but deep as well, and one thing you forgot to mention, the music! The music made by the man himself (Daisuke Ishiwatari) is so fantastic! And I love how every character is a reference to some rock band or person of Rock Culture too (Looking at you Axl) This game is a pure masterpiece that definitely went overlooked.

I remember discovering this game in 1999, and I was instantly a fan. the music and the characters had me sold. I remember seeing in magazines that the 2nd game in the series (Guilty Gear X)was releasing on the Dreamcast in japan and was rumored to not make it over to the US. So I quickly imported the game and loved every moment of it. to this day I am a Guilty Gear fan, listening to the music and playing every game and loving all but one title (that abomination on the DS). I even got into the Beta for Strive and while there were issues, I trust they will be resolved before the game's release.

Guilty Gear is my favorite fighting game series, balls to the walls metal music, great character design. Even their move to 3d art style they still have the sprite based feel unlike how the street fight series went. I personally think street fighter hit its apex with SF Alpha 3 mechanics wise, I think 4 and 5 have been prettier but lesser versions of the game and Guilty Gear became my fighting game of choice, BlazBlue was nice (made by the same team) but Guilty Gear still holds a nice place in my heart. No other 2d fighting series has yet to capture high speed fighting like this series (I lump BlazBlue and Dragon Ball Fighterz in with this series as it is the same team). For me Arc Systems is the gold standard for 2d fighting games.

One big reason I fell for the series was both it's distinct feel and heavy metal attitude as well as smooth controls that felt responsive rather than the more tank like controls of Street Fighter. And the impact it had is astounding, creating a whole sub-genre of fighters with a distinct feel and way to play. Now let's just hope that the series hasn't lost it's distinct spirit in the name of trying to appeal to everyone with Strive when it releases.

Never mind the idea of 'oh this dude's standing k is a round house and this other dude's a long reaching straight kick'. The entire sub style is like playing a completely different game! I watch them all and always learn something new . Maybe you could do a video on some of the terrible knock-offs that came out too . One that comes to mind is Star Wars : Masters Of Teras Kasi . Generally the first GG is not really considered a classic, but just as the point where the legacy started. It is actually broken as hell if you try to play it competily. The rise to fame and the absolut classic status basically came with GGXX#r, which was even regularly leading the Arcade charts in Japan and was celebrated for the extreme diversity in gameplay of its cast while being considered as one of the most balanced competitive fighting games at the time. Furthermore, the GGX(X) series was present with new instalments during the so called "dark ages" of fighting games (i.e. between SF3:3s and SF4). Plus it was one of the most influential fighting games, more or less founding the genre of "Anime Fighters". Not to forget that GGX was the first high res 2D fighting game ever.

Honestly, the first game is quite bad in terms of competitivity. The "combo in anything" system make some characters very umbalanced, they clearly didn't tested it seriously before release, and unlike everything after GGX, you can perform the finish move any time you want and without any punish if you miss.

That was a really fun game, but the instakill skills were really frustrating to me.

I never realized Tekken was supposed to be considered a more simple game, when right now it's the exact opposite.

You might as well feature Gundam Battle Assault 1 and 2 for the PSX next.

I was reading magazines close to when this game first released. I wanted it SO BAD. but I was poor back then. When I did get money in the years after that I just never got around to it. This means Xrd was my first Guilty Gear. I did finally get a few of the early games on steam a few years back.

The series got me into fighting games. The series is underrated as hell. Xrd rev 2 selling worse then crappier or unimpressive fighters that are out now speaks in volumes.
