The Taíno people are often credited with the guiro or gourd rasp of Cuba and other Caribbean islands. Some modern versions are made of hardwood, as is the rasp portion of this modern Native American style flute. I'm sure someone has made some sort of rasp on a flute of some kind, before, but I hadn't come across one, yet, myself.
The accents are real paua abalone inlay on black resin. The flute's fundamental pitch is D4, and it is the standard tuning centered around minor pentatonic. There seems too much work and risk of messing one up to offer them for sale, but I might try again. For now, this one is mine and I'll be making some similar, paua-accented flutes (likely without the guiro) for sale by me and/or a well-known reseller.
There was never any real intention to play the two parts simultaneously, but friends have motivated me to try corking holes and playing both, on a lark, lol. This recording is definitely not that. I looped three guiro cycles and then played over it.
