Ok, first off, apologies for the click batey title. However, as you will see I was lucky to not suffer a much worse outcome from this ride due to my own ineptitude. Ultimately I must have forgotten to refit the retaining pin on the front after checking the pad wear before the trip up north....I say that the outcome could have been much worse but the bruised pride of lowering a few sections of the Nomad black graded trail was a pretty bad outcome as it was. Still as I am always telling myself I am going faster than people sitting on the sofa etc...
So with that out the way, let us get into the back story. Half term holiday and a trip up to Whitby in North Yorkshire, booked last minute by Mrs MTB Derbyshire. The bike came along obviously. Clearly it was an opportunity to visit some places that I haven't ridden before. So I spent a couple of evenings scoping out the trails asking some locals online and looking on Strava and even Trail Forks (which I find useless for my neck of the woods, but was actually fantastic here) I felt that the off piste stuff was the best option at Guisborough and Dalby Forests.
Sadly the previously mentioned brake issue meant that I only got to do 6 trails (amazing I got away with that many really) and I had planned on doing at least another 5 or 6. These were all in the central/Eastern area of the forest. There are trails everywhere you look and really something for everyone though all require some half decent level of off road skills. I only did one black trail but this had a fair few challenges for me on a blind and slippy sloppy run. The GoPro effect is strong in this place....honest!
What I did manage to discover was that Guisborough has a truly amazing variety of trails and a dedicated group of trail builders that do a stunning job. Although for me it is a very long way to drive just for the day if I am up here again I certainly would love to come back and finish what I started. It would be extra nice if you could make it a bit drier next time too!
One final shout out and that is to Westbrook Cycles based in Stolesley. The fellas there fitted me a new set of pads, checked my brakes weren't damaged and simply charged me for the price of the pads EXCELLENT SERVICE!
