Custom Build Telecaster Style to Equal Fender’s Custom Shop at an Affordable Price? (PART 2) See Part 1 here - • Guitar Build: Part 1 -...
Over the weeks I have been building my own Custom Shop Telecaster Style Guitar - something that I hope will equal the Fender Custom Shop guitars I have here in the studio - at a much lower cost and produced using fairly basic tools.
In Part 1- I covered planning the build-project and specifically the foundation of the build - The “Body and Neck” - the popular choices available, and the reasons why I made the choices I made.
In Part 2 - Preparation begins for spraying the sanding sealer, primer and base vintage lacquer coats. In this video I cover the method I used to spray the foundational base-coats to both body and neck using spray cans and within a home style environment. Before spraying can commence however, a little bit of attention is needed to amend the body so as to avoid damaging finished paintwork in the final stages of construction.
As a long-time Fender Telecaster / Stratocaster lover and player I certainly respect the work that goes into the Fender Custom Shop Relic guitars yet am fully aware that these instruments are out of reach for many players who would love to own one. While not all have the DIY skills, tools and space to build a guitar, perhaps this series of videos might just inspire some to realise a dream.
While I have access to a fully equipped workshop and have many engineering skills behind me I have sought to put together a high quality instrument, where a good number of parts could be sourced at reasonable prices, using basic tools to create a guitar that’s for keeps…

In Part 3 - I continue the build process as preparation is made for the colour coat, clear coat, headstock decals and final coats of Vintage Amber Lacquer.
