I love the fact that you are not “spoon-feeding” the information to your viewers, but rather challenging us to put in the work, and figuring it out for ourselves. This harmonized scale idea also forces me to truly train my ears to listen for the intervals, and also my eyes to recognize the patterns inside the big scale shapes that I blindly memorized

Fantastic lesson; I selfishly wish you had a larger audience so you could potentially spend more time on making these for us. The theory videos are always incredible - and much needed - but it is also always nice to see licks and riffs other musicians come up with. It helps break out of ruts and gives us the opportunity to see the fretboard through the mind of someone else. Potentially don't even tell us how to play them, perhaps just go through a couple in a quick video and let us figure them out, I always enjoy doing that. Thank you for the lesson, and a thank you to Marty for featuring you on his channel. There's a real chance I wouldn't have discovered you otherwise.

It's been 10 years since I had picked up my guitar. My thoughts getting back into it was I just want to be able to jam by myself and not have to learn new songs and get frustrated with it. I went right back into learning the G major scale where I left off when I was a kid but I was disappointed that I wasn't hearing anything really musical out of it. Thanks for this lesson I'm really starting to hear something wonderful out of these notes now. I really appreciate you going into the depth of it all and sharing your "Wow" moments with us.

just need to comment here at 2 minute and 40 some-odd second in....the reason I am here is because I've recently had on of those "no way, ah-ha" moments with harmonizing scales. More specifically, with seeing this done in a similar off-handed way, demonstrated once, told it was a good thing to know, and spent all of the day fiddling with it. What is fascinating to me is that my brain "knows" this harmonization already. ?? That our brain already knows that this next scale degree needs to be harmonized with the sound of a major or minor third?? I don't know this amazes me so much, but it's almost like, hard to put to words but maybe something like....learning theory maybe is not so much like learning a foreign language as it is learning a language that we already know...but didn't know we knew?? yep. i cannot find the language to express this...in Engligh vocabulary in a comment anyway...pehaps I should resume watching the remaining 7 minutes and learn something....

@curiousguitarist
Жыл бұрын
Keep at it. Use your ears to help you "correct" any mistakes. When you hit a wrong note, stop and see if you can find the right one and try to understand the error. This will help develop your ears, hands and brain all at once. Are you trying to harmonize A Major in different positions? If so, you'll have to find and start on the A note (the root, or tonic of the key) on the different strings. Consider also doing this exercise for other keys, like G or B or C, and just replicate the initial exercise on the low E string. Hope that helps!

For some one who is just getting into theory, I have enjoyed your lessons, in your opinion what steps should the beginner start with then build upon? Thanks again to you and Marty for spreading the love ....L

I’m actually writing a theory primer for guitarists right now. My plan is to publish that for free to help folks right on the edge of understanding get a leg up. I should be ready to release that in February.

But specifically... 1) Take octaves around the circle of fifths 2) play every major scale around the circle of fifths 3) watch every video on this channel :D Those 3 should set you rolling!

@@curiousguitarist I understand octaves and I understand circle of fifths thanks to you, I do not understand octaves AROUND the circle of fifths

@@permculture Keep at it, it'll be an ah-ha, promise. Start octaves on C, then do them for G...etc.

Another inspiring video like many other videos you made. Practical music theories that can be put on my fretboard is resourceful and joyful.

Do you think you could also do a video on rhythmic strumming, picking patters?

Thanks Chris. I like how you alternate between theory and demonstrating how to apply the theory to the guitar in real hands on methods. Licks AND theory! Great teaching method!👍👏

Thank you Chris, I just subscribed to your channel. I dig the lesson based on the old school idea of "Showing the theory & then making a student do it themselves. It the proper way to teach anything!...Not just by handing over the information & copying it. True value is in the experience of doing something by yourself & the gratifying feeling you get from your own achievements! Again, it is refreshing to see. BTW- a shout out to Marty Music for promoting your site on KZitem.

Some say music is math. Could not agree more watching Steve harmonizing scales. Great lesson, I have been playing guitar for 30 years now and I still have this moments of discovering something new. Thanks Steve

Music is so totally math! I like to refer to it as "Sonic Geometry" :) And it's "Chris" BTW. Steve Morse is a guitarist that I reference in this video, but I'm just a "Chris".

I love these lessons and the way you teach! Setting up theory in an intriguing way is exactly what I need for these "aha!" Moments. This type of content energizes me to get out of a guitar slump and put my brain to work.

Love the theoretical lessons! I've been playing guitar for 35 years and have learned more in the past year than the previous 34! Your videos are a huge contributing factor to that! I really look forward to seeing a new video from you! Love your style!
