Yes too much bass on a Fender combo amp can be more than the amp can handle. I have added Presence and Mid Range controls to my 65 Princeton and it helped a lot. Also I'd like to mention that tone controls on Fender Amps act very much like volume controls. If you put all the tone controls on zero the amp will have very little volume even with the volume control turned up. Try putting the volume on 7 and then slowly dial in the tone to get a singing lead sound. Back off the guitar volume to get a clean rhythm sound. With the right mix you can get some great solo sounds. Back off on the guitar tone to get Clapton's Brown Sound. The old blues cats did not have any stomp boxes except for reverb and tremolo which were built into the amp. Funk 49 was recorded with a Fender Champ turned up, That's how he got that sound. No OD box, no tricks. Effects can be cool however if you can't play a jam without them you should find an amp that will do the job.

On the old Fender models with 3 tone control knobs like a Twin, you're right. The midrange knob worked that way, because that's all that it was. It only APPEARED to add mids because that's what the human ear naturally perceives the most of, but in reality it added EVERYTHING. But the Deluxe Reverb has just two tone knobs. Fender amps with just two knobs for tone controls like the DR actually have their "midrange control" set with a resistor to be the equivalent of a 3-knob tone control with its midrange set around 8. So with a two knob tone control you will still get a decent amount of volume out of the amp, even if you have the tone controls rolled all the way off.

It is hard to compare what Keith uses for live stadium gigs to what most of us use for small to medium clubs. A 22 watt DRRI handles the club gigs amazingly and can get plenty loud. I do not play large halls or open stadiums and for sure would rethink my amp choice for those. In studio Keith was know for using smaller amps that breakup earlier than say a Twin Reverb.

@ Chriskkboongg - Yes the tone IS in your hands. It's also in your guitar and amp, but make no mistake (and this is something everybody from EVH to Phil X will tell you) the tone is in your hands. If it's not in your hands, keep working at it. Masybe you don't know how to really play the instrument yet, but with a lot of practice, you'll get there!

That had almost nothing to do with Keith Richards. The entire bit of useful advice is to use the natural tube sound of a low watt fender amp?...that is 15 seconds not 3 and half minutes. This is really just a very limited amp demo.

Ah, that's an old adage. A lot of guys like to say that. What you're saying is true, and what they're saying is partly true. They just use the wrong word, imo. There's "Tone" and then there's "Personality" or "Style" (the right word doesn't exist) which one player's hands, and mind bring to the mix. If tone were purely in the hands more guys would be playing Peavey Rage 158's, and Yamaha S-Style copies. That was my first amp and it sounded like shit. We all need a word for what the hands bring.

I recently had to put my 65 Princeton in the shop. While waiting to get it back I had the chance to play an older Orange 15 watt and a 30 watt Vox. They were great! I've always been a Fender dude but these amps did a great job! The experience left me of the opinion that every amp brings something different to your sound so it's good to try out different products. I'd like to bring a 30 watt Marshal combo amp out to a gig and see what happens.

If you check the video of any Stones gig over the last 20 years you'll see Keith playing through two Fender Tweed Twins, which have quite a different circuit topology to the Blackfaces. Tweeds have more mids (the Blackface Deluxe is renowned for its mid cut) and little or no negative feedback, giving a more progressive breakup.

You get a nice tone, but that's way too gritty for a "clean" channel. How can you gig with an amp that overdrives in the clean channel when volume is that low. There's no headroom, and Keith has a (mostly) pretty clean tone. I had this problem with 15watt Blues Junior and I've upgraded to a 40watt Hot Rod Deluxe for gigs. Even 40watts struggles to stay clean with a heavy hitting drummer, specially if you are using a humbucker (I have a telecaster deluxe 72)
@rolodexroulette

@Philby62 well now you're boiling things down. 1. Keith Richards played the high-watt big box twin (meaning the speakers are not staggered) 2. The only people who make this type of twin would be Victoria and it comes in only 80 watts 3. Most tweed amps can get you really damn close to Keith's tone.

I love my deluxe reverb reissue. I did have to do a few things to it to make it mine like replace the speaker, power tubes, and the power and output transformers but thats just me. The question pretty much boils down to do you want a 10 or 12 inch speaker. You could always use the ext jack to add a 1x12.
