I think some of it is personal preference. I like harder picks, especially Jazz 3's. Have you ever tried the round end of your picks instead of the pointy end like you're supposed to? It's worth a try :)

How about homemade picks, made from old credit cards that kind of thing?

They'll vary greatly because of the different shapes and materials!

I bought a pick press device that punches pickups out from credit card material. My best pick I got was from a very thin phenolic board.

What ultimately is the brightest pick? I have an Alvarez artist elite 5220 Spruce top mahogany back and sides acoustic guitar, and though the spruce MAY help balance out the warmth of the mahogany but im looking for a very bright tone

I'd say try the thin ultex pick (0.60mm), good balance between usability and thinness. Otherwise, using a lighter string gauge will get you a brighter tone too ☺️
