11:38 FUCK YES. Megadeth gave metal riffs permission to be lushly melodic, distinct from the snarling savagery of Metallica’s riffs or the anarchic noise of Slayer’s. All metalcore bands play in a sandbox built by Mustaine and the premier guitarists with whom he’s built the Megadeth discography. And metalcore, btw, is the scene in which Coheed came up: their first two records came out on Equal Vision Records, and I first saw them on their “Second Stage Turbine Blade” tour as openers for Thrice and- the headliners!- Hot Water Music. 🤘🏻

What makes you say they are so important in music history? If you don't mind explaining. They aren't so much my style, but I love their music, and appreciate the hell out of it. I rocked No World For Tomorrow for quite a while when it came out. So I'm definitely not hating, I'm just not sure how "important" they are in music history, from my point of view. They are a relatively niche band... Not one you hear a ton of bands counting as a big influence to their sound. Though I'm sure some would, I cannot name one, maybe you can? When I think of bands that are "so important in music history..." I just can't say I'm able to imagine music as I know it being much different than it is, were Coheed never to exist as a band. Possibly a couple of bands affected but overall relatively unchanged... Anyway, just my opinion. I'm definitely open to someone changing my mind though. I hate to "discredit" in a way, such an excellent band, but "so important to music history" sounds like an exaggeration from someone who's a big fan of theirs, and not seeing things clear and without bias. Which there's nothing wrong with of course, I'm sure I do it too. I'm just wondering if you'll come back and hit me with something huge, that changes my mind!
@ForeverMasterless

@@danielnelson4881 As a Coheed fan I think you're spot on. They're pretty much doing their own thing and they've developed a pretty sizable fanbase but are definitely still niche. I can think of maybe four or five bands that seems to be directly influenced by them, but they're not very big. I would also argue there's nothing inherently trailblazing about Coheed. They're very talented but they're not like cutting edge experimental or anything really. I think a huge part of their appeal for me is them mushing together things I already liked. Namely post-hardcore, metal, 70s prog, melodic pop, and comic book storytelling. It's like I was listening to Thursday and someone said hey what if this but crazy intricate guitars and space opera? Fucking let's gooooooo.

I learned more about soloing from this video than I have in years of lessons/learning. I am a pianist by training and having you go into the scales was like turning on a light switch I couldn't find after looking for 20 years on and off.
