WSMFP!! Awesome...thank you, Michael. From their first album, and still one of their best, in my opinion. I first saw them in July 1989 at The Nick in Birmingham with Col. Bruce and & ARU opening. They officially released the Space Wrangler album shortly after that. Then I saw them a couple months later at The Nick again; then again at The Nick; then a couple months later in Tallahassee; Montgomery; Panama City; and so on and so on haha ... and countless times since! RIP Brother Mikey🎸

@@Guitargate In reference to your volume pedal comment, it was a HUGE part of his sound. But one of those things that works far better in a large arena or outdoor setting. Sounds different here; most likely due to this being on Austin City Limits and maybe the sounds were more direct and it doesn't quite have the same effect. However, he used to stand up while playing; but used that volume pedal so much he injured his other leg. From that point forward he never playing standing up again.

Incidentally, Houser sat down because of the volume pedal. He played it so much it messed with his legs, so he sat on a stool for every show.
@PanhandlePrepping

True.... But in the early years (the first decade from mid 80s to mid 90s) he would stand most of the time balanced on one leg which led to circulation problems like you said. He sat occasionally but didn’t start sitting during all shows until the “Sit and Ski” tour in ‘96.

It’s interesting to hear you describe this music from a teachers standpoint when Houser didn’t even know scales or theory. He just played. He made his own sound. He may have been playing scales, jumping from mixo to Dorian, minors and majors, flats and fifths, but I promise you he wouldn’t be able to tell what the heck you’re talking about. That my friend is a musician on another level that can’t be taught. It can be dissected, but never replicated. He was one of a kind.

Michael, u asked once why he sits and plays. Well its because of his use of the volume pedal, his leg/foot would go numb during the show. They had a run of semi aocustic shows back in the where they all sat and played. He found that sitting helped with the numbness so he continued to sit for all their gigs after that.

My take away from alot of their music and I like a lot of their fans have been seeing them for many years. Going back to 1994. Saw the band with all guitarist. Dave Schools will always be on as will the percussion in and out a lot of changes. JB will be unlike any lead vocalist out there as well. So much soul. I think so much soul is consistent with all of their music. You picked up and the relationship between Mikey and JB. They play similar chords but in diff places. Each member can have an overtone or note almost bite in a different direction and the music flows with it. By the way the band is kind of referenced as the lingering lead and that lead explores. The use of the wah with Mikey and even JB is to a unique style but phrases the song’s performance quite well. The styles are unique even when they cover other bands it’s unique. I enjoyed your breakdown. Will be seeing more of your breakdowns in future for other bands. Bravo to your setup as well Michael. Your a good teacher and host I can see that from this breakdown. Cheers
