In the 80s we called smooth jazz, Fusion. Then in the 90s I heard the term smooth jazz. I was always mesmerized by this music. Great lesson!

Thanks, good lesson and nice chords, I like to leave my little finger on to slide from notes E to D from the Dm9 to the G13 chord, A straight G7 second time sounds more resolved to me

Damn ...Good ear! The slow ultra jazzy intro chords played only in some keyboard driven versions. I believe the chord sequence is Dm9no5, Em9no5, F9no5, Em9no5

Hi. Nice sound! I hope that I can, with utmost politeness and respect, submit two points . 1- At about 3:40 you start to talk of the "G 13" chord, and you finger the root "G" with middle finger, the flat 7th "F" with your ring finger, and the 9th "A" with your index finger, and you tell us the open "B" string (the 3rd note of a G Major chord) is to be hit. That's a G 9th chord sir, as opposed to a G 13th. The 13th requires the high pitched "E" note to be struck, with the root "G", flat 7th "F", and hopefully a 3rd note and 5th note will be struck too. Number 2 point is, at about 6:20 you begin to talk "G 9" stuff, but that fingering does NOT have a 9th note of the G major scale, an "A" note, which is essential in a G 9th chord. Of course it needs its root "G", a flat 7th "F", and hopefully a 3rd and 5th. You are fingering with your index finger bar: a root "G", adding a 4th (C), a flat 7th, a 5th, and with your ring finger you finger the 3rd. So I am seeing a chord called G 7th (Add 4). Very best regards to you sir!

You're right G13 is actual a G9 here. Another notation is A7sus2(b13) which makes sense as Hucknall plays an A here. The third chord is just a G7. Whatever the chord names... they sound magnificent!

@@MrBeedub13 M.H. (lead singer of SIMPLY RED) when performing this on acoustic guitar, in the footage that I've seen, has tuned all 6 strings down a full step each. So what LOOKS in the film like a chord in the "E" range, has the notes of the "D" range chord, and so on, and so on...
