Another tip for people struggling like me: I just twigged that relaxation is key as well; any tension kills the rhythm and flow. Keep it loose and don't try to hard to force the motion or you won't be able to develop speed

@@invisiblespeedrc having posted that comment I've completely failed to practice what I preach haha. I have exactly the same problem... I think the vibrato motion needs a lot of strength to control so it's quite natural to tense up I think when that strength isn't quite there. Tbh I'm about ready to chuck my guitar out of the window as vibrato is frustrating me so much. I've put years of solid work into it now with so little reward

And with THIS, Mr. Levin, you cured my 18 year old unability to do the (downward motion wrist) vibrato. No other practice approach, that I found on KZitem (or which people told me), worked. There was nearly noone who gives any advice on HOW to practise it. Just what it "should sound like". One month of completely isolated practice with a metronome finally broke the 18 year old ice. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Cheers from Germany! :)

Most people just have an ear for what sounds good/bad. So when they practice, say, vibrato they know when they do it right. They don't need it explained. I like the dude in the video because he breaks it down

Every video teach us how to do it, but no one teaches us how to practice it which is so much more important than just learning the technique. This is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you so much sir. As of today this video is 7years old, but not outdated one bit. I also learnt how to anchor right hand fingers through another video of yours. Really helpful and makes learning so much more easy. Thank you.

Does the vibrato start on the beat, or the next subdivision? i.e. Do you play 1-e-+-a and start the vibrato on the 1 or the e? Seems like this choice will impact whether the beat ends on the tone or the raised pitch. Is one preferable?

Thanks for this. What about adding vibrato mid-bend? Can't seem to wrap my head around how to keep a steady, fast-enough rhythm for that. Is the focus in the fingers, the wrist, the arm?

@robertgillespie5382

zazuzonker bend up to the note, then the vibrato should not exceed that note. So you bring the note down then up to the not again over and over, don't overshoot the note.

so ... for some reason . classical vibrato which is incredibly subtle came to me the easiest . should I learn another technique or stick with what come naturally
@hectichive889

Nope learn another technique, that vibrato came naturally for me too (because I’m a violin player) and it’s too subtle for steel string acoustic and electric, especially on lower strings. It works okay on the higher strings, but still not that great. I’m trying to learn the standard vibrato, looks to be a lot more effective...

I agree with your technique, but I disagree that vibrato is a learned skill. As you stated in the beginning of the video it came naturally to you. As well it came naturally to me. I think this just may be one of those fascets of guitar playing that separate the unique from the mass. I feel that there's little technique involved, and a massive amount of intuition. Whether it be a half step, whole step, quarter step, anywhere between and at any tempo. Just the same with bending notes. You can practice bending a note but to be able to match a frequency anywhere in between is a skill that I feel can't be learned. For example, Gilmour. there is no practical way to learn his solos. Either you've got it or you don't.

Any thoughts on adding vibrato to a bent note?
@guitarmastery
8 жыл бұрын
+zazuzonker Yes. Forgot that one. This gives you the added option to oscillate down and up from the target note. Practice it by bending up to the note, then holding it, then do vibrato and once in a while stop and see if you are still bending up to the right note. I hope that makes sense.
@EgoShredder
8 жыл бұрын
+ClausLevin Which is what makes having a Floyd Rose so useful! Bend the note and then finish it off with some nice trem vibrato.
