Coming up, we’re giving you a rare inside look at one of the most power-packed partnerships of the rock era. Two mighty musicians at the top of their game went on a massive decade-long run… Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar… Van Halen kicked out four straight chart-topping records and 17 Top 10 rock singles. in just 9 years. For this episode we’re zeroing in on one of those tracks: the 1988 classic hit Finish What Ya Started. We’re telling the hilarious story behind its after-hours writing session. I actually got this one straight from this band’s legendary frontman the Red Rocker himself Sammy Hagar. And it’s really one of the funniest songwriting stories you’re ever going to hear. This famous guitarist interrupted his singer in the middle of an intimate night with his wife to write this song… and that’s what he wrote the song about.. the story is NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

For today’s installment, we’re honoring one of my favorite rock voices ever, along with one of the most insanely talented guitarists of all time. By themselves, these two musicians were undeniably brilliant. But when you put them together in one of rock’s most iconic bands, they were absolutely superhuman. The duo? I’m talking about Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar. This once-upon-a-time combo set the world on fire back in the day. And you can still smell the smoke decades later.
In addition to paying tribute to these two rock giants, we’re also covering what has become something of an underrated Van Halen song… but one that was very popular in its day with a hilarious story attached to it. The song is Finish What Ya Started from 1988’s OU812. For some reason, this one has fallen out of the public periphery. But I think it's the perfect illustration of these two incredible musicians clicking together and a very unique sound and groove to it. So let’s to it.
Since their self-titled debut album scored #19 on the Billboard 200 in ’78, Van Halen was on a steady march to the top of the US Albums Chart. 1979’s Van Halen II and 1980’s Women and Children First both hit #6, then Fair Warning #5 in ’81, Diver Down #3 in ’82, and finally 1984 reached #2 in well, 1984. That last one was held out of the top spot by Michael Jackson’s freight train Thriller. Incidentally, Eddie collaborated with Jackson on the album’s single Beat It, writing and performing the guitar solo… so maybe he gets partial credit? We’ve of course talked about what happened with Van Halen after 1984 multiple times, so there’s no need to go into detail.
But as the David Lee Roth era came to an end, the boys of Van Halen started searching for a new lead singer. Enter former Montrose frontman and high speeding solo
