0:46 To Gul Dukat's credit, he was never a puppet of the Dominion. Weyoun and the Female Changeling held *vastly* more power but they needed Dukat's forces and infrastructure. He knew this and used the leverage to stay on roughly even footing with them which kept him from suffering Damar's fate as Cardassian leader. I love how Dukat is written as having these great strengths but also great weaknesses, you know, like an actual person.
@SantomPh
Жыл бұрын
Dukat's aggressive nature and lack of obvious patriotism meant Weyoun quite liked him. He was also leader when the Dominon was winning the war, which means he wasn't blamed for any failures or replaced by Breen or Vorta officers. Had he been in charge when Damar was, he might have shared his fate
@Archedgar
Жыл бұрын
@@SantomPh I agree that Dukat's biggest weaknesses/flaws/sins were his lack of nationalism and his strong socialist tendencies. However, even if he had been head of Cardassia during Damar's time in charge he would have held his own better than Damar by virtue of character strength. Damar spent his life simply following orders. For better or worse, Dukat had a mind of his own and managed to 'creatively interpret' orders to his benefit..... that kind of thing.
@weik-2936

Dukat also had a strong force of will and personality that kept him from being a complete subordinate, and when he was a subordinate, he got concessions out of it, Dukat's accustomed to high positions of authority or just ignoring/refusing to completely follow the word of those above him, it made him difficult to be completely subsumed under the Dominion's authority
@blitzerblazinoah6838
10 ай бұрын
@@Archedgar @SantomPh I disagree with the claim that Dukat lacked patriotism/nationalism. We saw very clearly in both "Return To Grace" and "Waltz" that Dukat was highly nationalistic to the point where he shared most (though not all) of Hitler's views on racial supremacy and how might equals right. It's just that Dukat's narcissism and ambition superseded everything else. No episode demonstrates this better then "Civil Defense", where Garek stated that at his his trial, Dukat's father confessed that he had placed his own ego over his patriotism to Cardassia. Dukat was no different in this respect; like father, like son and as such this inherited or learned behavior trait only adds to the depiction of Dukat's already compelling character and further demonstrates what fantastic writers DS9 had.
@bobpage6597

Of course he was a puppet. There are numerous instances where Weyoun flexes his authority over Dukat, and he folds. Every time, be it the mention of breaking the treaty with Bajor, objecting to Odo having his own security detail, and others......when Weyoun chose to impose his authority, there was nothing Dukat could do. The power Dukat had was entirely at the pleasure of the Dominion - he just couldn't see it. It was the same for Damar, the difference was Damar could see he was a puppet with diminished influence. The callous disregard for Cardassian life, the invitation of the Breen into the Alliance without any consultation thus eroding Cardassian influence further, and then the fall of the 11th Order at Septimus III - 500,000 Cardassians left to be killed by the Klingons. The Cardassian leadership were always puppets - but only Dukat was the most blind and egotistical of them; Damar, and Broka who followed knew they were puppets. Dukat pretended he was more.

A fun duality with Weyoun was while he was shady, cunning, and ruthless, he was also unabashedly honest at times. So many examples of him calling it like it is throughout his appearances, with no sugar coating. Was fun when he called Dukat out on the BS he was putting out, or when he of all people was the one to gently call Jake out for his naive reasons for staying behind on the station.
