As someone who has lived in Gulfport then Biloxi for 16 years, I can tell you that Gulfport is the trashiest place in Coastal MS. Especially south of the Interstate. Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Long Beach & Pass Christian are all pretty nice, but Gulfport is the blight on the area. It’s because of the people that live there, the city tries really hard to make it nice but the crime keeps getting worse.

Gulfport "downtown" is very pretty, lots of money spent to make that happen. Just a few more block North, East and West things go down. I just looked up "industries in Gulfport, MS". Other than hospitality and healthcare there really aren't any big employers (It didn't include military). That's what this area needs, good solid employment. Not more casinos, but surely there is some manufacturer that could be lured here. Good question for candidates in the upcoming elections. There are good people here who just need more opportunities.

Thank you for showing how beautiful Mississippi can be. I live in Long Beach which is next to Gulfport. From the west it’s Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi. Most people hear MS and think uneducated, backwoods, racist, and poverty driven. We are so much more than that. The stereotypes come from the MS Delta area which is far north. Thank you again for showing how much more we are. I’ve lived here all my life. Katrina about wiped us off the map but our communities came together and we’re better than ever. I came to the MS Gulf Coast on vacation nearly 30 years ago. I fell in love with the quaintness of the towns and when I crossed the Bay bridge between Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis I had this sense I'd never felt but knew I was home!! I have been here on the Coast since and the greatest thing going here on the Coast and beyond on MS are the people. Life here is easy, laid back, and steeped in history because New Orleans is an hour away, Vicksburg to north, and so much more like the fishing, best food hands down, and the sweet tea and friendly "How y'all doin??". I survived Hurricane Katrina and witnessing this community coming together to recover from one of the worst natural disasters in the US, was humbling. We are a poor state yet are rich in all the qualities I never found moving around the world as a military brat.......so c'mon down and thanks for the awesome video of my favorite place on Earth......#MSGulfCoast

That 450k includes the ENTIRE MS Gulf Coast, from the LA to AL state lines, Hancock, Harrison, & Jackson counties. In fact, I think it is what they call the Southern 6 so that would include the 3 counties directly north of those 3- Pearl River, Stone, and George. Last numbers I knew for the 3 coastal counties were about 250k so that's why I think it's actually the Southern 6.

2:51 The route you took on US 90 you would have passed the site on 90 where Jayne Mansfield died. The car she was a passenger in, ran into and under a semi. Her daughter, actress Mariska Hargitay was also in the car in the back seat asleep. Jayne's driver didn't see the semi. Today when you see these big rigs you will notice a red and white steel cross bar on the lower rear of the semi to prevent cars from going under the rig. That device is called the Mansfield bar because of what happened on that highway in 1967. You would have passed the death site on 90 near Slidell.

There used to be a marker where the accident happened. But it disappeared. Probably due to the storm (Katrina) Heading west on US 90 in Louisiana in between the 4th and 5th bridges. The problem is you can’t get there due to the bridge has been condemned. There’s a local story that the old timers here tell about the accident. And it centers around a nightclub in Biloxi called Gus Stevens. His daughter’s boyfriend was driving the car.

Please note that the driver took I-10 all the way to Mississippi. He did not take Highway 90. However, you are right that if you take the old Highway 90, you pass the spot where the Mansfield accident took place. It was south of Slidell, on Hwy 90 by the Hwy 190 crossroads, near the White Kitchen restaurant which was a well-known 24-hour rest stop.

I also saw your video on Beloxi as well as this one, and both look like beautiful places, and at very "affordable" prices. I like the way you shoot your videos, and also cite the cost of housing, poverty and crime rates, to give one a true perspective. All places that have nice weather, and beautiful scenery, and close to the ocean, will not stay cheap for long. I'd bet in 20 years, these housing costs will triple in these small little cities. The only bad thing is hurricanes, and the damage they do to property, so I don't know how this will affect things. Maybe if they can hurricane proof houses, and buildings, and minimize damage, that would go a long way.

In Nov 2019, I was down there visiting a relative and home searching. It was more of a fact finding tour. But I recall LOTS of jelly fish in the water but west of where you are. Went back in July of 2021 to inspect a house but turned it down. But in Aug of 2022, we bought our new house up near Lyman. Moving down there late 2023 from SE Michigan. Though we are not from there, we decided to make Gulfport our retirement homestead. I've lived in FL, CA, HI, WI, OH, KY, MI and CT. Some of them twice and we spent 3 years looking at homes, visiting areas for the right place to enjoy and grow old. Looking forward to enjoying what GP and surrounding areas have to offer, but mostly, to get away from the occasional sub zero temps and snow. IMO, the area has never really recovered from Katrina but that's not really a bad thing. Thanks for your time and making of this video.

The first place I explored in Mississippi was downtown Jackson. I was pretty shocked at what I saw there. It was really bad - terrible pothole strewn roads, buildings and houses disintegrating into the ground. But I've seen other places since and I've now become a huge fan of Mississippi.

What a jewel of a place-miles of white sand beaches and middle class neighborhoods filled with clean, well-maintained homes not to mention an Irish pub perfect for a midday Guiness. Like so many places in our world, Mississippi may very well be falsely and slanderously represented. At the least, Gulfport, both in recent statistics (as you provided) and in visuals (also from you), sure seems a more than acceptable place to live in or visit. Once again, thank you.

You pretty much nailed it, David. This part of Mississippi is beautiful. It's also low crime with very low cost of living. It's got a really laid back beach vibe. It's now one of our very favorite places in the US.

The two story houses on stilts you showed are mostly new builds that replaced houses destroyed by Katrina. Gulfport has done a fabulous job rebuilding, for a "poor" state, we have made fantastic progress and lots more in the works. We've been here 5 years and have seen lots of new businesses and attractions pop up. The city cleans the beach regularly and takes pride in the Gulf. I lived Gulfport for 3 years, but recently moved to Biloxi. We love it here. Both cities have a lot to offer. Thanks for showcasing our area.

I live in central MS and have a vacation condo in Orange Beach so I haven't been on the MS coast in years. I'm really proud of the way the MS coast has come back after Katrina. I'm headed to Orange Beach mid November but I'm going to take the long way down and ride along the MS coast first. I lived in Pascagoula in the late '70s and the beaches were not as nice looking as in this video.

I have been watching your videos and enjoying them. I have lived in or close to alot of the southern spots in the deep south you have visited. I grew up in Gulfport, MS. I will say this about it, that area (and I include Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Long Beach, etc) is the best area to live in MS. Not alot of industry, but the rest of MS lives up to its terrible reputation. It actually made me a little homesick watching this video and the Biloxi video. Cajun/Gulf coast food is the best by genre, so watching these videos also made me want some of that. With that being said, there is crime just north of the downtown area. It is poor. And it highly depends on where you live, and like any place the more money you have the better outcome. I have lived all over now, and this area is not a bad place if you can make a living. But I am a gulf coast rat, so keep that in mind.

What a very cool little city! I was trying the figure out the structures in your opening beach, but I finally figured out that they were palm trees. Looks like a fun place to explore, and the barefoot option is a great one! The ceiling fans on the enormous porches were a surprise, but they make sense. I've never seen them where I live, but that might be an option for an outdoor porch!

I'm surprised the water was as clear as it looked. I have been in Biloxi/Gulfport area many times and the water is usually murky. Years ago I wondered why and found out the Mississippi river stains the water for a lot of miles from it's mouth. I have to wonder if the water clarity has anything to do with the extreme drought the river is experiences...hence less output into the Gulf. Just read today that a point up river from New Orleans the water level of the river is actually 11.5 feet below sea level....and that ain't good! Supposedly barge traffic is closed in many areas of the river and lots of goods..especially agricultural items travel from the interior on the river. The low water in the river is supposed to adversely affect our supply train issues.

Hey there and thank´s for the vids. For a bunch of years ago, whwn I was employed on a AP-Moller Maersk vessel, we went to Burnside in the Missisippi River, loading grain. It was wintertime and the Christmasholiday was at hand. The last vidios from you, were somewhere down the Gulf of Mexico where you passed a long Causeway to someplace I sadly have forgotten. But I do remember the sunset and I got a feeling from those days in the US, that I miss very much indeed. Best wishes from an old seadog

I visited some friends in Gulfport about 12 years ago, and went back again in April 2023. I LOVE IT! Me being an up north city girl, the south captures my soul. I wanted to go back over the years, but personal and financial reasons held me back from doing anything. I met a man from there who I fell in love with. But we couldn't pursue the relationship we wanted because of the distance, on top of him having the same issues I had. I found out he wanted to reconcile (and I was DEFINITELY willing!) But sadly he passed away before we could put our cards on the table and deal them the right way. My heart is broken because he's physically gone, but he'll be forever in my heart.

So happy that you enjoyed our GulfCoast! One hint - Biloxi is pronounced BeLuxEe. (Ask a local). It is a well kept secret and nothing like anything you’ve ever heard of Mississippi- the Gulfcoast stretches from just outside of New Orleans to Pensacola- very cosmopolitan and a mixture of people from all over. Many military bases and lots of retired military and “snowbirds” retire here! And lots of New Orleanians too

@@dixiedawgs8946 Small world indeed :O) We found a swimming hole back in the woods, actually, it was an area where they dredged sand for the white-sand beaches, the water was clear, and blue from a distance, and lots of little islands with tall southern pines, we had to quit going there when we saw an alligator :O) That was circa 1972, I was in second grade at Waveland Elementary school. Me and my dog used to go to the fireworks stand and by firecrackers, yep, they'd sell fireworks to a kid back then :O)

I am from this area and yes it’s pretty, but it’s in hurricane alley and prone to destruction from storms. We hold our breath every year praying that a storm doesn’t hit. We don’t have the sand dunes like Florida because it’s a man made beach which makes the MS Gulf Coast a vulnerable area

Katrina did make a mess of things, but you should have seen it in 1969 after Hurricane Camille hit. Total destruction. Cargo ships were beached. Gotta chime in being a MS resident (born & bred), the lighthouse was destroyed during Katrina. By destroyed, i mean it was gone! There's awesome trout fishing in the marinas. Lots if great food too. If you missed Cajun's up on Pass Rd, you missed out. Used to be my go to while visiting the MGC & Mcelroy's over in Biloxi. Katrina wiped it to a clean slate. But i recommend Shaggy's CB & seasoned fries.

Appreciate the representation of my stomping grounds for the last thirty years. I retired out of the Navy base just north of where you were at. You’re right about the cost of living here on the coast but since Covid hit property has gone up. There’s been a big influx of people moving here. I won’t get into it but they were basically tired of how their state was being governed. I gotta laugh seeing you at Shaggy’s. I’m glad you enjoyed your meal though.
