If you are unfamiliar with firearms but wish to buy one for home defense, do this: 1. Go to an indoor gun range that rents firearms. Explain your situation and they will rent you a few guns to try on their range. You can fire a .22, a 9 millimeter, a revolver, an automatic, et. You shoot the guns and see what the safety features are and determine which guns are too loud or have too much kick for you to fire comfortably. The staff will explain the pros and the cons of each gun. 2. Then go to a gun retailer and make an informed purchase. 3. Then go back to the gun range and practice so that you are confident that you can load, shoot and clean the gun safely. 4. Finally take a one-day course on gun safety. You do not want to own gun and not know ALL of your responsibilities.

Excellent advice! Problem is the gun shops are totally out of decent stock. There has been a huge buy-up of ARs and shotguns from both Conservatives and Liberals. I would add one thing not many people are talking about. If you discharge a weapon in a room the size of your bedroom, living room or whatever room it's gonna hurt both you and them. It feels like you've been hit with a brick, so bear that in mind when purchasing a weapon. A buddy of mine has one of those .50 cal revolvers, I forget what they're called, but I shot that thing without hearing protection. Training, training, training. I grew up around guns. I had them in my room as a teenager under my own supervision. That was NORMAL for people in the midwest farming communities of the time. Just from being around them everyday the safe handling and respect for the power was instilled at a very young age. It is an inanimate object that YOU fully control. IT cannot hurt you IF you handle it and store it properly, You have to learn how. If you were not fortunate enough to grow up that way, I have to say TRAINING is key. You have to know HOW it works and WHY it works the way it does. you NEED to be proficient and not scared of it. You MUST FIRE it enough to be very familiar with function, feel, etc........Training is so very important. Please folks. YOU are the only person responsible for YOUR OWN SAFETY. This is not a new concept to the world. It has always been this way, it is just new to some folks. Arm yourself. Arm yourself responsibly, and with a little training you can feel pretty secure and confident with your abilities to do so. Remember, When seconds count, the police are minutes away. That's if you are lucky. It all on us folks.

If you go to a reputable place that sells guns, many also give classes. Once you know how to use one properly, how to clean it, etc. You will not be afraid. You will have confidence. If you can also get a concealed carry in your state, do it now. Many states are trying to end this.

Shoot at least 5, and probably 10 before you buy anything. Many ranges will let you rent a caliber. It's expensive, but cheaper than making a bad purchase (most everyone has done that). Before shooting, check out videos by Chris Cheng and Mike Glover on how to hold a firearm. If you're near western NC I can make some recommendations.

I've been shooting since I was six years old. 63 now. I've trained hundreds of people. (unpaid of course). I've had even more ask me what gun should I buy? I ALWAY ask a set of questions first and even then I don't recommend certain models in most cases but sometimes I do based on personal experience with that model. That's like asking what kind of car should I buy? One with 4 wheels would be helpful. #1 What experience with firearms do you have? #2 What do you need/want it for? #3 How much money are you willing to spend? #4 How tall are you? How much do you weigh? What is your physical condition? #5 How much time and expense will you devote for training and regular practice? #6 Where do you live? City? Suburbs, Open country/Farm? #7 What do you live in? Apartment? Townhouse? House? Tent? #8 How is your home constructed? What materials? #9 How many others are in your home and their ages. #10 (If #2 is self-protection/defense). If appropriate and or necessary are you willing to KILL another human being? Number 10 is the most important. If the answer is no then why even bother buying a gun? If you just want to scare them away then buy a replica gun and PRAY. Unfortunately, most new owners are fixated on the lastest, biggest, badest, Obliterator Model 3000 guaranteed to kill, clean, and cook a Bull Elephant with one shot. That's OK if you normally fear being attacked by Bull Elephants. A firearm is a TOOL nothing else. Like different types of hammers have different jobs, so do firearms. You chose the one best suited for the job. i.e. No to minimal experience. Home defense, Cheap as possible, Female, 20's-30's, 5'4", 120 lbs, Good to excellent condition. Load it and put it in the bedroom training. House in the Suburbs, newer construction, Two children under 10. Husband in his 30's, If need be willing to kill, (not the husband). My recommendation, 20 Gauge Shotgun, 18 or 20-inch barrel, Pump-action. Ammunition? Low Recoil #4 Buck Shot. GET TRAINING! Same person but Apartment? The same firearm but remember you are surrounded by innocent people in every direction including up and down. DON'T MISS! If the person was 70+ years old and frail then my recommendation would be completely different. i.e. Ruger Model 10/22 rifle All Weather. Weighs little, easy to operate, extremely reliable, relatively inexpensive. Ammunition? CCI Stinger. Put them where they belong and they will do the job. GET TRAINING!

MANY OBJECTS CAN BE USED IN AN ASSAULT BECAUSE ASSAULTS REQUIRE SOMETHING OR SOMEONE TO PROVIDE THE IMPETUS FOR THE ACTION. IF I ASSAULT YOU WITH MY FISTS AND FEET DO THEY BECOME ASSAULT FISTS AND FEET? HOW ABOUT A HAMMER OR CROW BAR? ARE THEY NOW ASSAULT HAMMER AND CROWBAR?? A KNIFE? MY TEETH? CAN AN ASSAULT RIFLE BE USED FOR DEFENSE? USING "ASSAULT RIFLE" LOGIC, DOES IT NOW BECOME A DEFENSE RIFLE? SAME RIFLE, DIFFERENT USE! MY PISTOL OR RIFLE IS A TOOL, I AM THE WEAPON.

Antifi is a paramilitary group aligned to the Democrats in the USA today. Expect them to take over neighbourhoods and start policing them once the police are abolished. With murder common for Informers who deal with the government or Conservatives. I would like to see a entire programme ( UK spelling) on this; bring in specialists in terrorism & its history in Europe nothing to do with lslamic terrorism. Antifi is more like the IRA but other leftist paramilitaries in their organisational set ups as well and academics who know their mindset. @Jay Barker I have no problem with people starting off with a 9mm or .45 or whatever they want, caliber has nothing to do with it. The issue is new shooters trying to use a pump action shotgun, heavy, high recoil, etc, etc is a terrible idea. Experienced shooters have enough issues with pumps as it is, the last thing we need is new shooters trying to defend themselves with something overly complicated with such a limited ammo capacity.
@jamesharrison6201

Why? Not bad to start just have to remind to keep it tight to your shoulder. For me to advise and teach a gun class, they would start with singlshot arms. That teaches mechanics and concentration. Also teaches you to make your ammo count. Been hunting several times with folks with pump 12s and they snickered at my single 20. Took home as many or more doves as they but with half the empties. Course they also said I couldn't bring home pheasant and yet I did. This was before I was old enough to have to have a hunting license. That was 50 yrs ago

Personally, I would recommend a 1st time gun owner purchase a pistol caliber carbine for home defense over a shotgun (I'm assuming a pump action shotgun). It takes less training to use one, they're smaller and lighter, plus they have less muzzle blast and less less recoil. Modern semi auto's are much more reliable than they used to be and so is modern expanding pistol ammunition. A Ruger PC9 would be an excellent choice.
