Glazunov has got to be the most under-rated composer. The structural perfection of Bruckner with the lyrical charm of Brahms.

Legend has it that upon visiting the USSR in the 60s, Stravinsky stopped, and exclaimed, "Glazunov!" at a portrait of the old man. He certainly is underrated. The 4th, 5th and 8th, at the very least, should be standard repertoire.

Am I alone in my speechless admiration of all the Japanese, Chinese and Korean musicians who are capable of performing "Western" classical music as if they were European? If I had listened to this performance "blind", I could not have guessed that I was not hearing a first-class Russian orchestra

There is an interesting internal contradiction between the assumption that music is universal and the preponderance of the idea that the ability to play it is somehow ethnically determined. Which, I will maintain, is utter hogwash. The reason why, for instance, Russian musicians play Tchaikovsky in a certain way is mostly that they've had much more exposure to it, both in training and performance. Similarly, there's no reason to suppose that, with enough training and dedication (and here we hit upon the heart of the matter) anyone shouldn't be able to play Russian works in the same way that Russians do. Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, the most prominent Russian orchestras don't really sound all that Russian anymore. So everyone's come closer together.

@@bomcabedalWhen it comes to Tchaikovsky, my preference is for Austro-German conductors, not Russian. It would be true for me with Glazunov and Rachmaninov as well.

@@alger3041 The difference is that very, very few non-Russian musicians seem to be interested in playing Glazunov at all.

This is an amateur orchestra, glaringly obvious from inaccuracies in the strings, especially in the second movement chromatic passages, but its really a pretty high end one taking on ambitious programming, kudos and thanks for posting! Here's their website description: " Thank you for visiting our web page. Orchestra HAL was founded in April 2010 with the concept of "Harmony Achieved through Language". In Tokyo, where there are many amateur orchestras, we do not just bring our instruments and play, but we face music together sincerely, communicating with each other even though we struggle. That is the music we aim to create. With that thought in mind, we practice hard alongside our daily work and studies, improving our skills and building connections with our peers. There is no greater joy than if the music of Orchestra HAL can heal and move the hearts of those who listen to it, even if only a little. Orchestra HAL Leader Kei Kuroki"
