My father taught me to play chess when I was nine. He was a player. In those days (1950s) a lot of men played chess at work on lunch. My dad had a little portable set that would fit into his lunch bucket. I almost beat my dad a couple times before I became frustrated. (He never taught me how to win). So I asked him why he was making me play chess. He said, "To help you learn how to think." And he was right. I always look at all angles in a situation and I learned to anticipate the next thing coming. It has helped me a lot in life. Now I play chess to keep my mind sharp. I'm rated "master." Everyone would benefit as kids from learning to play chess. There would be a lot less BS out there, IMO.

I learnt how to play in high school since our breaks were 10 minutes or a 45 minute lunch “hour” - so there wasn’t much time to figure out what else to do. Indeed, it’s a mind thinking game. I became actually really good at it. I think it’s important kids learn these critical-thinking games so they make wise decisions (as your father said).

I'm with Tyrus. The claim that women are more "emotionally intelligent" (interchangeable with "emotionally mature"), is a ridiculous claim that people have accepted as a truism. Women _express_ their emotions more than men do. They are more overtly emotionAL, full stop. That's not maturity. Five year olds ALSO express their emotions more than men do. And it's not a category or function of intelligence. It's a personality trait. Women DO tend to be more affiliative and warm than men are, which makes women value _purely_ social activities more than men do. Men more typically want to pair socializing with an adjunct activity (something to do or watch together). That's just a function of evolution and has nothing to do with how mature or smart anyone is about their emotions. And these days, women are increasingly emotionally unintelligent and immature, because modern society tolerates and even encourages it by mislabelling it as a form of intelligence or maturity. Be that as it may. There's plenty of evidence suggesting that men would dominate a unisex competitive chess league. What Larry Summers said is true. And no, he didn't say men were better at math, or that they were smarter than women. What he SAID was that when it comes to population level distribution of any number of heritable aptitudes, propensities and traits (height, weight, health, and yes, IQ), men's distribution curve is flatter than women's. The average IQ is roughly the same for women and men (100). There are fewer precisely average men than average women, and as you make your way to the extreme high and low ends of ability, you will find men are increasingly overrepresented compared to women. More male than female idiots, and more male than female geniuses. The bell curves are similar across ALL heritable traits. When it comes to virtually every area of human endeavor, physical or otherwise, you will find more men than women at the top. This even applies to multitasking. Keeping many different things front of mind at the same time. Let's take a score of 100 as the default average. Many more women than men will score 70 or higher. 70 will get most people through a typical day just fine. Ergo, women are "better" at multitasking. More women than men will score the average of 100. 100 will get most people through a slightly frantic day just fine. But world class chefs? Internationally competitive Starcraft players? Air traffic controllers? Full-stack developers? Even performance jugglers. And yes, competitive chess players. WAY more men than women at the top. Women ARE making inroads into air traffic control (globally, they're at about 20% now), but that's probably because all those mostly male full-stack developers have automated HUGE chunks of the job. Also interestingly, brain scans show that when the areas of the brain associated with emotion activate, the ones associated with logic are inhibited. Congratulations, ladies. Larry Summers was right, but your "emotional intelligence" made you incapable of logically processing what he was actually saying. So you threw an "emotionally mature" tantrum, and got him cancelled. Well done.

There’s a phenomenon with iq where, while both men and women’s mean iq is basically the same, men’s standard deviation is wildly different than women’s. It’s a genetic phenomenon that can be most like understood by the Y chromosome, which allows for more genetic issues than women, but also allows for extreme abilities. Because the Y chromosome is smaller it has less genes, which means when a gene in the male’s X chromosome has something wrong with it or is a phenotype for a bad trait, there is less likelihood it will be suppressed by the Y chromosome. This is why men experience genetic conditions much more often than women and our life expectancy is much shorter. But while there’s a downside to it there’s also an upside. Because of this if a male gets a set of genes in his X chromosome that are exceptional at something, then that male is more likely to keep that phenotype because his Y chromosome is less likely to suppress it. This upside and downside of the Y chromosome can be seen in the iq of males, where men are more likely to be above or below the 85-115 standard deviation of iq, while women’s genetics are more stable where there more likely to be within the 85-115 standard deviation. This means that the majority of hyper intelligent people are going to be men, but also the majority of people with learning disabilities will also be men. This plays into chess because chess requires a lot of intelligence to be good at, and since most of the smartest people in the world are men, most of the best chess players will also likely be men.

I'm a big chess fan and have been playing for over 30 years. I am most definitely for keeping men out of women's sports when there is any way at all that men's physical advantages are relevant. However chess is one of those endeavours where there is no physical aspect to the play. I would even potentially argue that there should not be a women's division at all, or women's titles (ie. Women's GrandMaster is much easier to get than a GrandMaster title) but this is clearly done to try and get more women to play the game. When it come's to banning trans women from the women's category it makes the further implication that men have some advantage over women in the game of chess. I do not believe this is the case or that there is any data to suggest it. There reason there are more men at the top of chess is simply because more men choose to play the game.

@@petyai1348 I agree. As stated, the reason for the division is to encourage women to play, not because men have a necessary advantage. But if that is the philosophy you want to guide your decisions, why not have separate divisions based on race? People of colour are dramatically underrepresented in chess. Are they inferior chess players? I highly doubt you would attest to that. Rather, as I had said, it is a matter of proclivity and overall participation, and therefore a division is not needed unless for another political/social reason.

So, I'm a female chess player. I love the game and been playing since I was 8. I've competed before but the men always outnumber the women by like 15 to 1. I dunno why but there aren't as many girls who like it. When I competed with men and women, I'd never place. I went to a woman's competitions and I'd always place.

I grew up in a country where chess was VERY popular. A lot of girls played. I lost to girls before I turned 13. Then, something changed. During practices, it became clear that I moved to another level. Add to it how badly I wanted to win and difference became very big. I never thought of girls who kept practicing as dumb and respected their opinions. If you are familiar with MBTI theory about personality types, you’ll see that some types are better suited to chess than other types and these types have much higher % of men.

My son played chess in a coed league in middle school. In his 3 years, not one female finished in the top 3. BTW, men and women have overall IQs that so close its amazing. Preferred careers differ quite a lot though. Tyrus tends to throw out statements like women are smarter than men without thought.

- "men and women have overall IQs that so close its amazing" Only because many of the "standardized" IQ tests tend to emphasize "verbal" intelligence over math and spacial perception. Flip that table and IQ scores won't be so close.
@bertram-raven
Жыл бұрын
@@robinm1729 That is true in IQ tests for adults. Originally, IQ tests were only for testing development milestones in prepubescent children. I can reveal from experience Mensa tests have become substantially easier in the last ten years. Once you know for what they are looking, the non-verbal questions become trivial, whilst the verbal tests are more about the breadth of vocabulary than testing innate understanding.

There is an intellectual difference between men and women in regard to games like chess and the Rubric's cube. It's just biology, don't let it hurt your feelings. Think about evolution and group hunting. The development and refinement of tactical and strategic movement and placement against large prey. Men did that for thousands of years.

There is no men's chess. There is open leagues and women's leagues. Anyone can play for the world chess championship (if you can qualify) only women can play for the women's chess championship. Different ratings and everything. Judit Polgar (the best woman player ever) never played for women's titles, she thought it wasn't a real test of her abilities. The whole reason for women's leagues has nothing to do with ability. Males are just more interested in games and so the top people will always be male. Just think about it you have 1 million guys and only say 10,000 women, well the top ten players will all be men, it's just math. They created the women's leagues to patronize young girls into wanting to play. The ruling is being set down because there is different achievements that you must make to get titles, changing your gender doesn't change that. Doesn't mean women don't already compete with men, of the 2000 or so GM titles 40 are held by women.

None of these people know what they are talking about chess. Even the top women chess player said men are better at chess. It's just the truth. Even men brains are larger than women, even though it's not proven to impact intelligence. Top chess players are men. These people beat around the bush, saying women have this or that, that's why they are not top at chess games but it's biological
