Then he goes on a rant about how volunteerism is actually just a meaningless gesture under capitalism or something.
@DruzaCardonikc
Жыл бұрын
For real though, volunteering is the best way to fight capitalism. If we feed one another, capitalists can't withhold food in order to compel us to give them our labour in exchange for their food, instead our labour can be put directly to our community. If we house one another, the landlords can't threaten us with homelessness in order to extract our wealth, our wealth can instead go towards our own personal as well as the community's benefits. Fight capitalism by feeding your neighbors and joining tenant unions.

But if you find out about that sort of activity, by accident or on purpose, then it is reasonable to expect you to find an alternative, less evil company to purchase things from, if it is economically viable for you to do so. If it would be impractical for yourself to find an alternative, then that is another matter, but that is not a blanket excuse to buy from whomever you want in all circumstances. There's nuance to the matter. You need to buy from someone in order to survive, all companies are evil to one extent or another, but some are less bad than others. When consumers continue to purchase products from companies that engage in exploitative labor practices, they effectively create a demand for those products, which, in turn, sustains the supply of goods produced through such practices. If theres a consistent demand for products manufactured using exploitative labor practices, companies are incentivized to continue those practices to meet consumer demand and maximize their profits. By purchasing these products, consumers indirectly support the continuation of said unethical practices because they contribute to the demand that drives the supply chain. On the flip side, if we actively choose not to buy products from companies that do this and instead support companies with ethical labor practices, it can create a shift in the market. When the demand for ethically produced goods increases, companies may be motivated to adopt better labor practices in order to meet consumer expectations and capture a share of the growing market. People absolutely use that as an excuse to consume mindlessly, but the solution to an exploitative economic system isn't just buying the "nicer" brand either. It's, dare I say, a much more nuanced issue than people realize.

@@mittensthemighty7028 buying from a local business that tries to use local ingredients might be an example. Everything is interconnected, but if you are, say, actively buying new clothes made in sweatshops instead of secondhand clothes and then taking the moral high ground because you believe in a socialist system while participating fully in the capitalist system, it’s a massive amount of hypocrisy and fucking infuriating
@arandomzoomer4837

@@Souldestroy199 true, but I don’t think Marxism is the solution. We’ve had thousands of years to try a variety of different systems, and if Marxism worked it would’ve proven itself by now and not collapsed under its own weight and caused irreparable harm to the societies that went through it

@@arandomzoomer4837 Except your local ingredients are most likely being harvested by undocumented immigrants being paid nickels on the dollar. Not only that, but if you're buying from a local restaurant, then you're buying from a place that pays their employees minimum wage who likely have trouble making ends meet. I agree with the second-hand point. And please explain to me how you're supposed to operate outside of a capitalist system when there are no other systems available in the world today.

Tell Steve about the cobalt mined by children just so he can have his smartphone. Tell him to stop oppressing black Africans and boycott cellphones.
@martinbanck1723
Жыл бұрын
To be fair, you can buy a Fairphone if you want to buy a more ethically produced smartphone so there's no need to boycott cellphones entirely. Ehtical consumerism is however ultimately a slightly elitist hobby that not everyone can participate in because buying the more ethical thing is usually more expensive and staying informed about what products are more ethical takes time and energy not everyone has. It also doesn't really solve any of the systemic issues our global society faces at their roots. In fact it can potentially be detrimental to progress if it distracts people from pushing for real change or is used as an excuse to maintain the status quo. "Oh, issue X would be solved if everyone just bought product Y instead of Z. No need for political action." Because of this people shouldn't be shamed for their consumer choices. Encourage them to get politically involved instead if you want to do something. But if you can afford it, and it's not distracting you from pushing for real change, it's good if you can be ethical in your consumption, ceteris paribus.
@carlpanzram7081

@@martinbanck1723I disagree. If everyone would make the most ethical choice every time, you would force cooperations to adapt to new ethical consumer trends, or else they would go out of business. You know, cooperations don't act immoral because they are just inherently motivated to be immoral, they do unethical things, because people don't care enough to avoid them because of it. It doesn't have enough of a negative effect for the business. That pressure is in the hands of the consumer, and no one else. This is evident in capitalist practices like greenwashing. Corporations adapt to consumer demands, they HAVE to. It's not capitalism that is the root cause of most of the evil practices people blame capitalism for, it's literally you, spending your money in support of evil practices. In my opinion, cooperations are exactly as ethical as the society they are funded by. I mean, I'm assuming that political regulations force cooperations to be transparent in their practices and methods. That would be somewhat necessary. (tho it's possible for consumers to avoid cooperations that don't adhere to self imposed regulations by third parties.) In my opinion, capitalism is pretty much a system that is democratic in nature.
@martinbanck1723

@@carlpanzram7081 You are in theory correct, so I don't entirely disagree. In theory consumers could boycott everything unethical and it could make the world a significantly better place. I don't think this is a realistic demand to place on consumers in practice though. Most people work for a living and don't have the time or energy to research the supply chain of every little thing they buy to make sure it's the most ethical consumer choice. I think this approach is also highly inefficient. A lot of human progress is thanks to the specialization of tasks. In the context of this it makes very little sense to demand of everyone to be an expert on all the supply chains of everything. It makes a lot more sense to democratically agree on some kind of standard for manufacturing and labor and delegate the research and regulation of, say, electronics supply chains in Asia to a team that are experts on electronics supply chains in Asia. Also worth mentioning is the prisoner's dilemma effect on atomized consumers. My individual choices don't really matter much in isolation. If I try to be an ethical consumer it doesn't really matter if everyone else still doesn't, unethical corporations will still dominate regardless of my choices, therefore there's little incentive for me to pay more to be ethical. Similarly, if everyone's already an ethical consumer the unethical corporations will go bankrupt anyway, so doesn't matter if I'm an ethical consumer or not. The key to overcoming this prisoner's dilemma of consumers is to cooperate and collectively and democratically agree on what standards and regulations we want to have. I strongly disagree with your claim that capitalism is pretty much democratic. People have vastly different amounts of money, rather than one vote per person, and capitalism does not fairly reward creation of economic value. Salary negotiations between an atomized, non-unionized working class, desperate to survive, and relatively few, oligopolistic, entrenched corporate boards and wealthy shareholders cannot possibly be fair and equal. This is the reality, no matter how pretty and elegant supply and demand curves may look. Capitalism also rewards mere ownership of economic value, of capital, with more economic value at the expense of fully rewarding the creators of economic value for their labor.
