Understated, funny, and smart. One of the best SNL News "Anchors", and this story shows some insight into the news business. Morning news intentionally has a short cycle - precisely because every 20 minutes or so, one group goes to work, and another group tunes in. But still prefer longer-format coverage. Back to Norm - Chappelle recognizes talent. Norm often sounded like a guy at the bar who had JUST started really feeling his buzz kick in. Then he drops a nugget like "tyranny of will" to light up a room.
@rustyrebar123

It is not a word that starts with a vowel, it is actually a word that sounds like a vowel. Hour sounds like "our" which is a vowel sound, so you use "an". If instead you were saying Hero you would use "a" because that sounds like a consonant sound. So, it does not matter what actual letter it starts with, it is the sound it makes, a vowel sound is "an", and a consonant sound is "a"

(Invited by Dave) He gave a great set, the spent time talking about how he would not have had a career if not for Dave Letterman. David Letterman was his first TV gig that started him on his path. "An" is the article that precedes any noun or noun phrase that begins with a vowel sound (such as "hour", in which the "h" is silent). "A" precedes nouns/noun phrases starting with consonant sounds (fricatives and plosives, as well as voiced palatal approximants "y" amd "w", which act as consonants when situated before vowels, incl. at the beginning of words). Norm's "a hour" is gramatically incorrect, but playful and stubborn language misuse was always a part of his comic persona.

One thing I love about this bit is....the audience pretty much is able to guess what Norm is going to say before he says it...right up until the end with the "deep grave" part lol. I think most people believe he is going to say "shallow grave". But I could be wrong. I also love how relatable the joke is but then turns to something you can't relate to ...like stalking and plotting murder lol. Norm just walks the audience from a safe subject into the mind of a "psycho sexual sadist" and no one really sees it coming. Norm has so many great jokes and podcast moments, and other comedians/famous people have stories about Norm that are just as funny and wild.

It's half AN hour, because the H is often silent in english. there is no difference in the pronunciations of the words "hour" and our". Hence why it's get the "AN". yes english has various 'rules' but there tend to be as many exceptions as rules. Especially with the I before E rule Since the pronunciation silences the H, to ring off the tongue half AN hour uses the vowel rule.

Norm made you a deeper person. He was always playing 4D chess. He was as much philosopher as comedian. Norm was a master craftsman who forced you to think or react to finding out his joke wasn't for you but rather you were the joke. He was kind and an ass. His feud with Chris Katan was awesome. He'd love to make you laugh but he was just as happy making you groan or even cringe. You have to watch his standup to get a better idea of who he was. His late night appearances were never intended for the audience. He did it for the the host or for the meme and he did them long before memes were a thing. You can also check out his battle with the View. There's nobody like him. Even the way he left us was epic. RIP Norm.

Hour may start with an H- but the H is silent so the word hour is like it’s a vowel SOUND. Comedians practice their jokes and are very meticulous about every word they use. It’s like a magic show, and THE TRICK is to make it seem like they are telling the jokes for the first time 😉
