Our CEO, Steve Gwenin, speaks about the many benefits of our volunteer programs for teens. www.gviusa.com...
We offer a range of volunteer opportunities from one to four weeks for high school students between the ages of 15 and 18. Teens on our projects not only get the chance to complete required community service hours but they will also have the opportunity to explore different environments and cultures. They’ll also get the chance to enhance their communication skills and ability to work in a team. Our teen programs aren’t just about volunteer work, high school students will also get the chance to explore the surrounding environment and learn about the local culture by selecting from a range of chaperoned trips.
At GVI we focus on ensuring that all our projects make a measurable, sustainable impact in the communities and locations where we work. When designing our volunteer trips for teens we’ve also focused on making an impact on the lives of the students. High schoolers are at an impressionable age and giving them the opportunity to learn about global issues and how they can be part of the solution encouraging them to gain an awareness about the world around them, which is what becoming a global citizen is all about.
Many of the high school students who have traveled with us have had their eyes opened to the many new potential careers out there. Our programs are designed to allow teens to explore as many new avenues of interest as possible in the hope that one or a couple of things might light a spark in their imagination. This then allows them to think about whether this is something which they would like to pursue in the future.
It’s wonderful to see how each and every high schools student really evolves over the time they spend with us on some of our service projects abroad. They start to really understand the issues people face in other locations face, opening the door to intercultural competency and communication.
A lot of careers are now internationally based, and high school students who travel with GVI get that first taste of what a global workforce might really be like. It really sets them up with many skills which they’ll need for the future, helping them stand out above other candidates.
Our programs are structured to allow students to get the most out of every moment, but that doesn’t mean we don’t take the group’s ideas and preferences into account. Depending on what the group is interested in, staff can customise the trip to allow them to do more of what they would like.
Most students who have volunteered on these projects say they’ve had a chance to really bond with classmates they wouldn’t usually speak to, building relationships that will benefit them when they get back home.
Previous students have found our staff approachable, friendly and helpful. Traveling to a new country can be great for learning independence but it can be scary, which means that having the support of our in-country staff really matters.
Our programs include summer volunteer opportunities for teens as well as alternative spring break programs for high school students, which means that students can travel during a time which is most convenient for them.
