Here is a continuation of the action where we left off with our previous video of the Alpena. This is the saltwater ship Gwen departing Duluth, Minnesota on the morning of June 5, 2024 around 5:30am. Gwen had previously arrived in Duluth on May 31, 2024 carrying wind turbine blades to be discharged at the Port Terminal dock. After unloading was completed, she departed empty bound for Montreal, with some assistance from the tugboat Missouri who helped her back out of Port Terminal and then offered an escort until Gwen was turned and lined up with the shipping canal. The Gwen's arrival was covered by Paul Scinocca if you'd like to see the video on his channel: • Rare! Tugs in the Cana...
I had to chuckle when the Gwen radio'd the Aerial Lift Bridge and said they would be "pretty quick" with their departure. I don't recall seeing a ship ever depart Duluth quite so quickly. Usually I have more time to compose my shots of the ships as they leave, but I was really rushed just to get shots composed and focused with Gwen. When I record in this location on the pier, I will wait for ships to pass under the bridge then I will move down the pier a "couple of light poles" to get a clear shot of the ship moving through the canal. Despite hustling to get into position, the Gwen was already at the lighthouse by the time I got set up again.
Like the other vessels in the dship Carrier fleet, Gwen is apparently named after a popular musician. In this case, it seems likely that she is named after Gwen Stefani... lead singer in the band No Doubt along with having a successful solo career. (The video title is a nod to a song that Gwen is famous for.) Fortunately, Gwen (the ship) was in the mood for singing on her way out of Duluth, bellowing out a fine (and loud) captain's salute, which the Aerial Lift Bridge answered in return. It seems the days of almost never getting salutes from salties is now over, where we now get salutes from about 75% of the salties we see... occasionally even master salutes and night salutes. I wonder if all of the KZitem videos from so many creators is helping saltie captains realize they are putting on a "show" each time they visit.
The 456-foot Gwen was launched in 2008, originally sailing under the names Beluga Fortune (2008-2011) and Fortune (2011-2018) before obtaining her current name. She is a multi-purpose heavy lift dry cargo vessel, capable of carrying both bulk cargo and package cargo, including shipping containers and large project equipment. She is strengthened for heavy cargo. Her three cargo holds can carry 9,600 tons or 15,950 cubic meters of cargo. Two deck cranes are available for loading and unloading of cargo, each with a capacity of 180 metric tons. Gwen is powered by a single MAK 6M43, 6-cylinder diesel engine generating 5,400 kW at 500 rpm. A 500 kW bow thruster is available to help maneuverability. Gwen sails for dship Carriers headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda.
