Enjoyable listening for sure. Question: did you record this audio with a line-out, or with microphones?
@sordini66
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your message. I do my recordings direct to a USB stick and then do a little post-production work in Audacity. So much easier than messing around with microphones and background noise, etc. Also, the piano is probably the most difficult instrument to record acoustically. This was one of the main reasons that I chose the NV5

Most of my recordings are done using a variation of Classic mode, although I have altered the paramaters somewhat using the Virtual Technian feature to achieve the piano sound that I am most happy with. I then put the final recording through Audacity where I have created a special graphic EQ setting to provide a consistent volume and tone

Hi Ron, I hope that you're doing well. Coming back to this video and having another listen! Wow, amazing interpretation. I'm in the process of learning it and it's going to take some time to get that finesse 🙂 I did try the sound setting on my piano and wow it sounds different. Are you just recording in that setting now?

Hi Gilberto. Thanks for your message. It's always good to hear from you. Yes, this Gymnopedie by Satie is deceptively difficult to get just right. You really have to create a certain mood and retain it throughout the piece. I haven't done any recordings using the new setting yet - all my recordings so far were done using the 'Classic' setting in Pianist Mode. But I really do like the SK-EX setting in Sound Mode. Unfortunately my NV5 developed a fault last week and I am now waiting for a Kawai technicain to come and fix it. The G sharp/A flat immediately above Middle C simply stopped sounding so I now can only play pieces that don't feature that note. Really annoying. I guess it's a faulty optical sensor. Hope you are well.

Does the NV hammers hitting still feel real at low volume ? Ive tried a hybrid Casio & the action is nice at medium or high volume but at low volume feels fake / doesn’t match! “The hammers is too hard or have too much swing” wondering should we just get a CA79 or 99 ?

Hi. Thanks for your message. I have never played either the CA79 or the CA99 so I can't compare them. But I have not noticed the effect that you refer to when the NV5 is played quietly. In fact, both the dynamic range and the breadth of expression which is possible on this instrument are impressive

If you mean with the volume turned down low (as opposed to you playing very softly) Stu Harrison at Merrian Pianos mentions this in his reviews of the NV5 and NV5S. The latter instrument has a special compensatory trick to stop the action from feeling too heavy at low speaker volumes. Evidentently, it is a problem on the NV5. The general advice is to avoid unrealistically low speaker volumes on digital/hybrid pianos.

Thanks for the info. I have a couple of K&M folding music stands and didn't know they also made lights like this. They make excellent products.The NV5 is a replacement for a Casio GP-500, which was destroyed due to a burst water pipe over it. It was extremely difficult to find a replacement due to the pandemic. I will miss the grand action, but the Millennium III action feels very fast and the sound on the NV5 is exceptional. Keep playing and recording.

Thinking of buying the nv5. How do you find it playing wise and did you compare it to other models?
@sordini66
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlton. Many thanks for your message. Before buying the NV5, I did a lot of internet research and watched various reviews and videos on KZitem. After playing acoustic pianos for 40 years, I had set my heart on a hybrid piano so there were really only 2 to choose from - the Yamaha N1X and the Kawai NV5. In the end, I chose the Kawai because I think it has a much better sound and some better features over the Yamaha. I have not been disppointed. The sound is phonemenal - you can actually hear and feel the sound resonating inside the cabinet - just like with a real acoustic pianoi with strings. Also, you have complete control over every aspect of the sound so you can customise the perfect sound and then save it. I record a lot too so this was an important consideration for me. The NV5 enables you to produce studio-quality recordings direct to the USB, in either wav or MP3 format. It couldn't be easier. Finally, the instrument looks like a real piano and not a digital which also appealed to me. I hope that these comments are helpful for you.

@@sordini66 Very nice playing Ron, really relaxing to hear and to see. I'm wondering whether you happened to play the NV10 as well? Did you still like the NV5 better? I know the NV5 delivers a very close acoustic experience, it makes sense too since the cabinet and the action are basically acoustic-like. The NV10 has got acoustic action too but the speaker system (cabinet) are quite different from anything else.. which makes me wonder how close it could be to a grand experience.. thanks and keep well!

@@DavidIzquierdoAzzouz Hi David. Many thanks for your message. No, I didn't consider the NV10 - mainly because it doesn't really look like a real piano, and of course it is much more expensive than the NV5. I have played acoustic pianos fdor the last 40 years so I was a bit nervous about making the permanent shift to digitals. I have not been disappointed. The sound of the NV5 is fabulous - you can actually feel it resonate through your feet - just like a real piano. The touch is wonderful and the recording is totally uncomplicated - you can simply record directly to a USB stick in MP3 or wav formats. The Onkyo 6-speaker system is fabulous. Hope this helps

@@sordini66 thank you Ron, it's revealing indeed, I'm also pretty much sold to the NV5, but it's still an upright action which is more than enough, but wanted maybe to have the grand action if everything else in the NV10 was at the same level like in the NV5 which I'm suspecting it's not.. Anyway, thanks and keep pleasing us with your nice playing 🎹

@@DavidIzquierdoAzzouz Just one more thought. If you are a really good pianist (and I am not), you might probably benefit from the grand action of the NV10 which has a triple escapement,meaning that it's much easier to play rapidly repeated notes. The NV5 has a normal upright action with a double escapement so it+#s not so easy to achieve this. Since I don'*t play very much fast music, this is not an issue for me.

Hi. many thanks for your message. The latest generation of digital/hybrid pianos are so good that it is almost impossible to tell the difference in touch between a digital and an acoustic instrument. So it is all a metter of taste. A digital takes up less space, costs nothing to maintain and can be recorded easily and played with headphones. Most of the models also have a lot of features which are very useful for a beginner.

@@zainalu After having the GP500 for two years and now comparing the Roland LX708 and the NV5 I'd say the GP500 has THE best action on the market. I would get the GP510 if it was available in an instant, if it were available. But it's not due to the pandemic causing them to severely reduce production. My piano was ruined due to water damage and required replacement. A NV5 was available and I bought it. I love the sound and hope the upright action will work for me. The sound and realism of the NV5 is amazing. I happen to really like the Bechstein and Bosendopher sound as that is what I grew up playing and also at the music conservatory I attended.as a child. But now I'm in my sixties and don't play at that level, lol. What is so much better with the NV5 is the sound through the speaker system is better than the Casio. The Casio GP500 is much better through the headphones than the speakers while the NV5 sounds exactly the same. There was a Shigeru grand in the shop and it sounded almost exactly like it. But these days I mainly use headphones due to disturbing the family. I will be very happy with the NV5, I'm sure of it.

Hi Mike. Thanks for your message. I do tend towards melancholic/lyrical music and these kind of pieces are well suited to the NV5 romantic sound. However, there are numerous other piano sounds available on ths instrument and some of them are much closer to the brighter Yamaha sound. @@sordini66 Seems we agree. The shame is that almost nobody reviews/demonstrates the other piano patches on the Kawais, perhaps giving the impression that they might not be suited to certain performances. Also, I understand that most of the microprocessor is dedicated to tweaking this patch on the NV5(S) & NV10(S). It's fair to say that Kawai is selling its pianos mainly on the SK patch alone. Myself, I fancy the MP-7SE, and would use it almost exclusively with the EX patch, but I'd sure like to hear more of the EX. Thanks again for your nice playing and your courteous reply.
