Roma have been in Romania since 1300's. That's longer than Romania has existed as a country. They were used as slaves by the Orthodox church for hundreds of years, helping to build your wonderful churches for no reward. If you are Romanian you are more likely to share DNA with Roma, Slavs, Thracians, Hungarians,Germans, & Turks, rather than French or Italians.

Two years ago when the RomaTaxi driver in Bucharest almost understood my conversation with my wife in the native tongue of Rajasthan, a north western state, I decided to spend time on this and find out how. According to records Roma left India around 1050. They were the tired soldiers of the army of great Rajput King Prithviraj Chauhan who fought 17 wars with Mahmood gajnavi. All Roma belong to warrior tribes. They did not want to fight and some went west and some went down to south India where they still are in their red and yellow colour clothes and huge moustache. On the way, Roma took words from Persian (like bibi for Kaki) and many other tongues including Greek( drost for road). They somehow lost their last names of fine Rajput warrior tribes. Roma may try to find surnames like Sisodia, Chauhan, Shekhawat, Nainavat etc. But they kept first Indian names until 19th century like Bihari and his daughter Panna of Romania, both great musicians. Today Roma use many of the words from Rajasthani, Hindi and of Sanskrit origin. Few are ek do trin yak nak bal angusth bersh diwas sassu sussro saalo Sali chora chori cior(chor) gia sov kammes thalle upral purano maal and so on. Romani words are from pre Muslim era in India and hence pure Sanskrit lik hiv for snow or ice. Please go to the following in KZitem to see more. “Romani an Indo Aryan Language” and “Roma girl from Kosovo finds her roots in India” All Roma had moustache which was necessary for Rajput warriors. Purity codes of Roma are still practiced in India like a lady not entering the kitchen during few days of the month. Roma break the plate if animal licks it. My mother used to give them to beggars. Roma had also carried our proverbs like” while choosing a daughter in law believe your ears more than eyes” meaning reputation of the girls family was more important than her beauty. Would native Europeans choose a daughter in law? Roma eventually lost their religion but Sara kali of southern France has favourite Rajput deity of Goddess kali. The deity is immersed in water body like we do in Rajasthan. Dr. Ian Hancock: Keynote Address at Romani Studies Conference, UC Berkeley There should be no doubt that Roma are our lost pral and Pena. Hats off to them to keep the language and culture alive even after 50 generations while we melt away in two generations. Any Roma may communicate with me on shree709@gmail.com. I am a 65 years old factory owner from Hyderabad, India originating from Rajasthan where Roma come from.

"The European Union has designated 2005-2015 ‘The Decade of Roma Inclusion' recognising that time, energy and funding needs to be targeted if this group is to gain access to Equal Opportunities in education, health, housing and employment in Eastern Europe" Haven't seen any indications that this is working!!!!!

if people were against humane euthanasia. Countries like Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, etc. are very backward in their thinking, dont believe in euthanasia and yet are quite happy to poison, hang or shoot the animals. Some of the undercover videos of dog catchers in Romania I think would upset even the hardest of hearts. It is a huge problem but nobody wants to address it.

Yes you are right, they have already started to come back home. Romania is such a beautiful country and the traditional values are still in place so I bet that the cultural shock was pretty hard to take on. And again, it's the employer who hires them, they're just applying! As for the thiefs throw 'em in jail, give 'em hard labor, to make others think twice before stealing. Of course this does not apply to the elite world financiers who created this horrid economical mess we are all in now.

You are right when you say that people associate all Romanians as gypsies. This opinion is not helped by the horrific animal abuse (strays) in Romania. It is probably at the same level as it is in Greece!

I do sometimes feel a little sorry for them, but in truth the state still does not seem to give them any rights at all and so they are becoming the scourge of european countries. When the Czech republic joined the EU, the president or prime minister openly encouraged them to go to the U.K. to scrounge off the benefits.

I am surprised at your comment, I guess I was hoping for something a little more sympathetic. I am sorry your cousin was bitten. I don't think you will find these dogs are rabid. They are there because of ignorance, ie. no neutering and started off as abandoned pets. I agree I would not like to got where there are packs of dogs and when I visited Romania many years ago there was not this problem, but that b.....d Ceausescu was still in power then. We would have the same problem in the u.k.

Well, unfortunately you are right about the hostile relationship between romanians and gypsies.. and believe me, there were numerous attempts to integrate them, they got free housing that they just ruined and trashed, forced to go to school, they did not want to, and so on.. and what that do in W Europe, they do in Romania too.. Maybe you're right about Romanians, but believe me, they're not all the same. If you're in UK you should see that there are also doctors, nurses , etc...

Well, again the media...I wonder why it doesn't publish articles about international science competitions, where Romanian teams are always in the first places, or about Romanians working for the highest ranked IT companies, or look who won the Geneve Inventics competition this year... see, there is another side of Romania that this media just doesn't want to see...

Well, I just wanted to point out that not all Romanians are low lifes .. And since Romania is part of EU now, if a person is qualified enough and up to the required standards for a position, and I'm sure that they are interviewed and screened before getting it, that company will hire whoever they think it fits better.

Yes , it is sad to hear about the level of corruption in Romania, but they're working on it!! A lot of prison cells are awaiting for these criminals who got rich on EU funds. I'm glad to hear about your involvement in the stray dogs problem in Romania. Obviously their place is not on the streets, but they are too many now, so, what's the solution? Adoption would be one, but there are not enough Romanians who are willing to adopt..

No, it's the opposite. I think that people should stay in the countries where they were born, and help build that country. And go to other countries just on vacation. But it wasn't me to come up with this "globalization" nonsense. I was on Heathrow once (a layover) and I bet that very few of the people working there have British ancestry. I'm sorry to hear about the economic crisis impact on UK. I know how it feels, first hand. I live where it started.

I don't think you are Romanian and by the way we are not Latins just our language originated from Latin, WE ARE DACII/DACIANS. Now gypsies have gave the Romanian people a bad impresions everywhere in the world, and we as Romanians which has been and always will be a proud NATION, have cast them away (gypsies), sure we have hate towards them, and it is justafiable, when they steal, rob, kill, beg, etc. They Have mansions/ castles sometimes 20 rooms and then they ask for money from the gov't

You provide ZERO no suggestions to help solve the VERY REAL issue of Roma/gypsie immigration. From your comments here and on other sites you seem to wish that every city with these problems simply look the other way, to ignore what is happening in their cities by these people. This approach from you is entirely un realistic.
