Fun game by Konami with a banging OST (Bach would be proud ^.^)
More enjoyable when playing (casually) for score! This is how it goes:
Speedkilling waves when they appear grants a bonus (up to 3k depending on how many you've completed on a stage), and killing enough enemies during the first 4 (fixed) waves will spawn an extra 5th (random) one.
After that, 3 enemies will appear that give a total of 4.5k (or 3k and a power-up), but they may not appear under certain circumstances (having killed too many enemies or fully destroyed the first 4 waves afaik). So scoring-wise it seems better to speedkill only 3 out of the first 4 waves (plus the 5th one). This is what I did on stage 2, for instance, since that's one of the stages I remembered well enough (and it's easy).
Upon reaching each planet there's a "chance" stage. Enemies don't shoot here and there's no contact damage on these, so no need to worry about ramming into enemies. With a good route killing all 40 enemies should be quite doable (I just got 2/6 though XD).
Here's a video with every bonus: • Gyruss - Planets (Chan...
In the end, the scoring system relies heavily on memorization (or not, just get as far as possible... it loops endlessly), but it's quite friendly for new players. The repetitive nature of the waves between planets gives the player a chance to learn them and get some bonuses on the following warps before the next planet (but it can get a bit boring in the long run).
Edit: After watching The History of Gyruss: • The History of Gyruss ... , I learnt that we can get some tick points from shooting the indestructible asteroids, 100 pts per shot. Another small detail to spice things up a bit more :D
