Here is the H. Lee White departing Duluth, Minnesota just after noon on June 27, 2024. The White had brought in limestone which she discharged at the Hallett 5 dock. After unloading, she remained at the same dock, where she then loaded blast furnace trim for delivery to Gary, Indiana. It's slightly unusual for a ship to unload and load two different cargoes at the same dock on the same trip, but given that Hallett 5 works a variety of cargo (limestone, dolomite, salt, blast furnace trim, etc.) it doesn't come as a big surprise either.
The captain of the H. Lee White knows how to work the crowd along the piers. After exchanging a captain's salute with the Aerial Lift Bridge, he gets on the loudspeaker and gets the crowd to cheer loudly... then gives them two more captain's salutes as the White makes her way down the piers. It's fun to see when the ship and crew are in a good mood and spreading their cheer to the crowds. It certainly makes for a memorable occasion for the tourists who might only see one or two ships on their visit to Duluth.
Unfortunately, I was "bridged" for this departure, as I had originally hoped to record the White's departure from the south pier. But the bridge opened early to let a number of sailboats and fishing boats through before the White arrived. (The first radio call I included in the video alludes to this.) A light cloud cover kept the sun from totally ruining our view of the White's departure. Plus the captain's interaction with the crowd has hopefully kept the video interesting even if the lighting isn't perfect.
The 704-foot H. Lee White was launched in December 1973 and made her maiden voyage in June 1974. She is powered by twin V-20 3,600 horsepower GM diesel engines and has both bow and stern thrusters that help her maneuver while in port. Her six cargo holds are accessed by 23 hatches on deck, giving her a maximum capacity of 35,200 tons. Her self-unloading system that can discharge 6,000 tons per hour. Due to her length of less than 740 feet, she is one of relatively few American-flagged vessels that transits the Welland Canal between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. She has sailed her entire career for the American Steamship Company up until early 2021, when she was leased to and operated by Grand River Navigation.
