A very clear day allowed Pen y Fan, in the Brecon Beacons, to be seen from Hackpen Hill, Marlborough Downs Wiltshire. On a bearing of 292 degrees, and 120-odd KM distance, Pen y Fan is labelled in this video. Stitching the 18 photos together used "Panavue ImageAssembler" programme which can iron-out distortions and make the joins as blended as possible. The line of bearings in degrees (clockwise from North ), at 5-degree intervals, were positioned by calculating the pixel/bearing relationship of two landmarks towards each end of the stitched strip, then either getting bearings from known pixels, or getting pixels from known bearings for any intermediate points. Bearings and distances could thus be got from maps in cases where a landmark was reliably identified on a map. The other situation is where an object seen on the photo strip needed finding on a map. "Oziexplorer" programme was used to produce a line along the required bearing looking out from Hackpen, on the map. In most cases the object could be found, but it was often necessary to go past 2 or 3 hilltops to be sure of choosing the right one considering the effect of the Earth's curvature.
