Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that by Allah, there is no deity but Him. One day he sat down on the path from which the Companions used to leave. Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah. The only purpose of my asking was to give me something to eat but he left and did nothing. Then Umar passed by me. I also asked him a verse from the Holy Quran and the purpose of asking was only to give me something to eat but he also passed by and did nothing. Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by and when he saw me, he smiled and recognized what was in my heart and what was on my face. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, 'Abahir! I said, "O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Come with me and you will walk." I followed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went inside the house. Then I asked permission and I got permission. When you entered, you found milk in a bowl. Where did this milk come from? He said that so-and-so has sent it as a gift to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, 'Abahir! I said, "O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Go to the people of Safa and call them to me." He said that the people of Safa are the guests of Islam, they would not seek refuge in anyone's house, nor in anyone's property, nor with anyone! When charity came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would send it to him and he would not keep any of it. However, when a gift came to you, you would send for them and eat some of it yourself and share it with them. So I was offended by this and I thought that this milk, no matter how much it was distributed among the people of Safa, deserved to get some strength by drinking it. When the people of Safa come, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) will say to me and I will give it to them. I may not get any of this milk, but I had no choice but to obey Allah and His Messenger. So I came to him and conveyed the invitation of the Holy Prophet, he came and asked permission. He got permission and then sat down in his place in the house. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Abahir! I said, "O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Take it and give it to all those present." Then I grabbed the cup and started giving one by one. One person would return the cup to me when he was drunk, then he would give it to another person. In this way, the people who reached the Holy Prophet (sws) were drunk and watered. At last the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took the cup and placed it on his hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) looked at me and smiled. I said, "Labeek, O Messenger of Allah!" He said, "Now you and I are left." I said: 'O Prophet! You are right The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Sit down and drink. I sat down and drank the milk and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kept saying, 'Drink and drink.' I finally had to say, 'No, by the One who sent you with the truth, there is no room for it now.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, 'Then give it to me.' I gave the cup to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He praised Allaah and recited Bismillaah and drank the rest himself.
