Matthew Patrick Quinn as a 1920s industrial grunge salt-and-pepper mafioso in a pinstripe suit, leather trench coat, and motorcycle gloves is quite possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Saw the performance last Friday. Will never forget it.

We saw it two nights ago (the first show in Toledo). He completely took over every song/scene he was in. His voice has so much body and low end, and his shouting was so crisp and sudden that it'd just pierce through everything else.

His voice sounded so familiar for half an hour and when the lights came on for intermission I was able to read his bio. He was listed as being apart of the cast of Scooby-Doo Live, something I saw when I was younger. He was amazing to see live! He fits the role of Hades so well! Love this cast:>

I do too, but narratively it doesn't quite fit Hades characterization as vengeful and angry. All his subjects come to him of their own volition. The song isn't to keep them in fear of him and his wrath but fear of the perceived alternative, a fear that he shares with them in a sense. I like the staging better in the tour though with that massive door portal along with adding extra lighting for character reveals is so much cooler imo. It also adds to the "I conduct the electric city' line when they shutoff.

It's good, but it's missing a real menacing edge that the original had. The original performance gave me absolute chills. This one just doesn't quite get there for me.

@@Toidal The door is cooler in some moments, like Hades' entrance in Way Down Hadestown, or Eurydice's entrance in Why We Build The Wall, but there are some moments that just aren't the same without the elevator, like Hades and Persephone's exit in WDH, Eurydice's exit in Gone I'm Gone, and of course the event that takes place at the end.

God does anyone else feel like he really doesn’t understand this character? He plays hades like 1920s caricature of an oil barren. Not a long suffering man tasked with cleaning up humanity for all of time. He also doesn’t feel like he loves Persephone that deeply, like he plays it as if he actually does sleep with Eurydice. Idk he feels so broadway and actory it didn’t feel real at all to me.
@maggieclevenger655

This Hades is that. He isn’t like Greek Mythology. The script insinuates that he slept with her because of the closed doors. It’s in the script. In the play he makes every attempt to love his wife, but she prefers to be up top in the sun. She has jaded him to feel like this. He portrays it rather well.
@karsonpalmerswork

The script doesn't imply that at all with the behind closed doors, that bit is a set up to the shock later when orpheus and the audience find out she signed the contract. It was never supposed to be a sex thing. Little songbird only happens because its Hades thinking about doing it to piss off persephone. But he cant do it and she knows that "the girl means nothing to me" "I know" he only stares down Eurydice in front of Persephone. Also it absolutely is within context of the mythology. Anais says that herself that it is all incredibly tied in with the mythos of the gods. In her book she is adamant that the biggest part of Hades's character is his unwavering love for his wife. He is literally unable to consciously hurt her. @@maggieclevenger655

This could just be me, but I always felt that MPQ's Hades actually felt the least like he slept with Eurydice? Like some Hades actors definitely play up those implications, but MPQ's Hades felt a lot like he was just pretending to be interested in Eurydice to make Persephone jealous, rather than actually being interested in her.
